SPEAKER_01That's it. We're ready.
SPEAKER_00We're ready to finish September and start October. Wow.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00See yours flying.
SPEAKER_01Three quarters of the way done.
SPEAKER_00Sheo. All right. Let's get, let's just jump in. Shall we?
SPEAKER_01Ready.
SPEAKER_00Do you have anything to say before we jump in?
SPEAKER_01No, I do not.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Steve just yawned. Hopefully he can stay awake for this.
SPEAKER_01Except it's hot.
SPEAKER_00All right. September 29th. Um is John chapter 5, verses 1 through 11. And in the little ditty up at the top, it says, This is why my favorite healings. And it's and I I don't I don't know why. I mean, I like it because you know that there's all these people there that need healing. Right. And that Jesus went to this one particular person and healed him. I mean it says here a great number of disabled people with all different types of um disability. And I I just I picture Jesus coming into this um this place, and I think it said there were, yeah, five colonnades. Um it's a pretty big place. Yes. And I don't know, is he is he stepping over people and maybe there's a pathway or something through them, but yeah. But he purposely walks up to this one man and he says, Do you do you want to get well? And and I I also love this because this is just so human. He says, I have no one to help me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like I've tried.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00And I I I can't do it.
SPEAKER_01And it sounds like when the water in the pool is stirred, the first one in has the best chance of being healed.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01And this guy can't be the first one in. You know, and he says, I'm trying, I'm trying to get in, but someone else gets goes ahead of me, you know, so there's no number.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And I don't I don't know how paralyzed he is. Um but you would just think, uh I okay. Because this is how my brain works, and I just like I plan stuff out. You would just think that over time he could have made his way like to the edge.
SPEAKER_01Already, yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00And then, okay, it's stirring, and and couldn't he have just like pushed himself or just kind of toppled over into the Trevor Burrus.
SPEAKER_01And maybe there's many people at the edge.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that could be. So it's other people thought of my idea.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they stole it from you, I'm sure. So, you know, when I reviewed it, you know, read or before reviewed it today, you know, it sounds like you know, Jesus asked, Do you want to get well? And and his answer is, sir, I have no one to help me into the pool when the water stirred. So I'm trying. I am trying. So he doesn't say directly, yes, I do.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_00He doesn't say that directly.
SPEAKER_01Right, right. He says, I want to, but I just can't.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It does say while I'm trying to get in, someone else goes ahead of me. So I guess he had thought of it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's trying his best, it seems like. As you read the whole thing, he's trying his best. Obviously, someone brings him there, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Stays there yet.
SPEAKER_00Or you just stay there all the time.
SPEAKER_01Maybe he stays there all the time. He has a mat, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But Jesus kind of says, get up, pick up your mat and walk, right? And it's an explanation point. Get up. So, you know, Jesus heard, I'm trying, someone else goes ahead of me. Just get up and walk. Go. Right?
SPEAKER_00See, the way Steve says it is like, get up. So I I would have said it as get up.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's an explanation point. I don't know what it is.
SPEAKER_00So get up.
SPEAKER_01Get up. Well, pick up your mat and walk. Pick up your and but pick up your mat.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Don't leave your mat here.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01We don't want your mat.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01And walk. And he does that. And and you know, so that's kind of interesting, but the I think the last two paragraphs are more significant. Because it was a Sabbath, right? Of course it was. And the Jewish leader said to the man who had been healed, it is the Sabbath. The law forbids you to carry your mat.
SPEAKER_00I know.
SPEAKER_01So he can't carry his mat. He's healed, right?
SPEAKER_00But Jesus told him to carry his mat.
SPEAKER_01Right. But the man who made me well said, pick up your mat and walk.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right? But the man who made me well, and I don't know what happens next. Right. I mean, I think, isn't there almost a trial of some sort? His parents get called in, or is that a different story?
SPEAKER_00No, that's a different one. That's the blind.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But regardless, no questions about that. You know, and in this little, you know, chapter 5, verses 1 through 11, it really is this is like what Jesus is all about. I'm coming, I'm going to do good things, I'm not so tied into what the law says. Right? Right. Healing on the Sabbath, walking and carrying your mat on the Sabbath when you were unable to walk is more important than do nothing on the Sabbath. Right? Yeah. So yeah. And as always, you don't know what happens, right?
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01But apparently he's healed. And he's pick up your mat and walk. Can you imagine if he whoever lived with his parents lived with somebody? What are you doing? Oh, this guy healed me, so I'm good to go.
SPEAKER_00Well, can you imagine if you were one of the other people?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00The great number of disabled people is like, uh, hello. Yeah. Right here, me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, why did you pick me?
SPEAKER_00And we don't know. It's it is possible that Jesus healed other people that day. And just this is the only one that was written down. Right. We we don't know. We don't know.
SPEAKER_01But the this is again, Jesus, the guy, and this uh Jewish leaders are the main characters, and the Jewish leaders aren't interested in healing. It's the Matt Carey. Matt Carey. That's a serious problem.
SPEAKER_00Right, right. And and perhaps they didn't know that he had been disabled.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but the man who made me well said to me.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I don't know what condition he was in.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_01I always think, what does this say about us? And maybe we get tied up in what the rules say and what the expectations are, as opposed to just taking action.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But the guy, I mean, he throws the blame on Jesus. Maybe he will say it to me, pick up your mat and walk.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, just I was looking at the rest of the story. And um it says so the Jewish leaders asked him who who told you to do that. And the man said, um he had no idea.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, more or less some dude. Right.
SPEAKER_00And it says later Jesus found them at the temple and said, See, you are well again, stop sinning, or something worse may happen to you. And then the man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well. And then they um Yeah, they wanted to kind of be like, you know, you can't be healing on the Sabbath.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00We all know that's a no-no.
SPEAKER_01Stop sinning or something worse will happen. That'd get your attention.
SPEAKER_00Right, which could lead you into a whole thing. So was he he paralyzed because he sinned?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because that's sure what it sounds like. But all right.
SPEAKER_01We don't know.
SPEAKER_00Ooh, that's a long time on one.
SPEAKER_01But we know there isn't Bethesda, Maryland.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01Do they know they're the Sheepgate pool?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. They aren't listening to the podcast. They need to. Or at least they aren't downloading.
SPEAKER_01They got called out.
SPEAKER_00There you go. All right, September 30th, last day of September. Ta-da-da.
SPEAKER_01Yay!
SPEAKER_00Um, this is from Matthew chapter 14 and 15, a few verses from each one. Um and when when I was putting flip devotional together, uh this really kind of caught me because um we often hear about the these individual healings, uh, and we kind of focus on those. But I thought it was interesting uh in this passage that Jesus healed many people. Um it says that he crossed over and landed at Genesaret. Okay. Um and it says when the men of that place recognized him, excuse me. Um I thought that was interesting. So they recognized Jesus.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so he must have been there before.
SPEAKER_00I guess so, because you know, there's and they knew he could heal. No newspapers and stuff like that. Um, so they recognize them and they send word to the surrounding country, like, you know, Jesus is healed here. Yeah, and and he heals and come on, he's here, he's here. And it says people brought all their sick to him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And says, all who touched his cloak were healed. And then it says um from chapter 15 that he left there, went along the Sea of Galilee, went up on a mountainside and sat down. Great crowds came to him, bringing again people who needed to be healed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No specific individual stories, right? Great crowds.
SPEAKER_00And it says they laid them at his feet and he healed them. So m multiple healings.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So I just and they praise the God of Israel. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I guess that could happen today, right? Crowds get healed.
SPEAKER_00I don't know why not.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's my opinion. You know. I mean, he's not here, but he couldn't be here in spirit, right?
SPEAKER_00And he's in all of us.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And we have power maybe we should work close through God. Could be.
SPEAKER_01I don't think so. But yeah. Maybe we aren't receptive to it ourselves to allow it to happen. May say more about us than other people.
SPEAKER_00Right. All right. October.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00All right. The theme for October is do not be afraid. And the the thing, if you have the book, each month has like a cover page or a title page. And um, there's a little ditty uh under the the name of the month. And October's um says, and I've heard this multiple times, I've not actually done the counting myself, but it says that do not be afraid is mentioned 365 times in the Bible.
SPEAKER_01It's an interesting number.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01One a day. Do not remind yourself, do not be afraid.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um and I guess this is a good one for this October because of Halloween.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. That's that was my thought. Um and I am one who gets afraid sometimes easily. Growing up, my my sister, I had an older sister, two and a half years older than me. And she would say, Okay, I'm gonna go up to the top of the stairs, and I'm gonna hide behind the wall. And when you come up, I'm gonna jump out. Said, okay, okay, I can do it. I can do it. I'd walk up top of the stairs, she'd jump out. I was like, aha! And she said, Why? You knew I was gonna be there, you knew I was gonna do that. Why why did you yell? Like, I just because it's what I do, right? But so I love a lot of these scriptures in the October section, um, because they're ones that I go to when I'm afraid and to reassure myself that God is with me. I don't need to be afraid. He says, Don't be be afraid, he's got this and right and stuff.
SPEAKER_01So sometimes we gotta remind ourselves God's there.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes. So this this is a good month for me.
SPEAKER_01Cool.
SPEAKER_00Um, October 1st, Isaiah 41, 11 through 14.
SPEAKER_01Now we're gonna give you the 411 on Isaiah. Because well, it's 41, 11, then it's 114.
SPEAKER_00Wow.
SPEAKER_01So it's numerical palindrome, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Wow, nice.
SPEAKER_01That's what I contribute.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. Yeah, I love that. In case you don't know, a palindrome is something that's the same forwards and backwards. So very good.
SPEAKER_01And a palindrone is someone you know who lives at a drone.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Steve has a sister in Texas. She loves palindromes. Dromes, not drones. Drones. All right. So this passage um says, it's kinda in the middle, for I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear, I will help you. Do not be afraid, do not fear, for I myself will help you. I mean, please.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00What more do you need?
SPEAKER_01And it says, you worm Jacob, small little thing, it's not derogatory. Little Israel. I mean, Israel is not very big, it's still not very big, but do not be afraid.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right. Yeah. It doesn't matter. And I also like at the end, it's um your redeemer.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But you're right. Every night again we gotta remind ourselves to not be afraid.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and so many of these scriptures in October are just they are so once you read them and just take them in, it's like, why would you ever be afraid of anything?
SPEAKER_01Like, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Come on.
SPEAKER_01Those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So it's pretty good.
SPEAKER_00It's very good. It's very good. There's the lots through here that um either I I have memorized or like I I need to memorize so I can easily pull it up in my head um and and repeat it out loud, which I I do sometimes. Um, October 2nd, uh Joshua chapter 1, verses 1 through 9.
SPEAKER_01Remember, Joshua was an orphan.
SPEAKER_00Son of none. Son of none. Oh boy. Woo.
SPEAKER_01That's a good one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there you go. He wasn't really an orphan, guys. He his his dad's name was none. All right.
SPEAKER_01So um Joshua was Moses' um says aid, but he was Moses' number two person. He was when he, you know, he went led battles, he communicated with people, he was there all the time when Moses. He didn't go up on the hill, but I think he was very nearby, up on the mountain when Moses went up. So yeah, he he was and this is the beginning of Joshua, right? Right. And this is kind of part of the story of Moses is has passed away, right? Moses never made it to the promised land.
SPEAKER_00No, because he did that tap on the rock thing, and he just God said sorry about your luck.
SPEAKER_01Um, but Joshua is now the leader of the Israelites.
SPEAKER_00Right. So like Moses passed the baton, Joshua, Joshua is now gonna lead them into the promised land.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And that's where these passages are the scripture is happening.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00They are are just starting that.
SPEAKER_01They said, get ready to cross the Jordan into the land, right? You and all these people. So he's talking to Joshua directly.
SPEAKER_00And my little Diddy up at the top, I really wish, I'm sure that thing has a name. Not Diddy. Little Diddy up at the top. Right. Somebody somewhere knows what that is called. And we've gotten some fan mail. I appreciate there's someone in Paris, not France, but Kentucky, who the second most famous Paris. Yes, who um has messaged us several times. Love it. Um somebody out there knows what these things are called. Yeah. Come on, just send it to me, please. I beg you. So I quit calling it Diddy. Um, but anyway, up there I said, when you're stepping out into something new, do not be afraid. So sometimes people think the Bible doesn't really relate to them, or you know, especially the Old Testament.
SPEAKER_01They're like Especially the Old Testament. It doesn't offer me anything.
SPEAKER_00I'm not doing battles.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Um, you know, no flaming chariots. There's, yeah, this, I don't get it.
SPEAKER_01Like you know, I don't want frogs and locusts.
SPEAKER_00But Joshua is doing something that has not been done.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He is taking this group of and something he's never done.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He is taking this group of people into the promised land.
SPEAKER_01600,000 men.
SPEAKER_00Jeez. That that God is giving them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I would I would be afraid.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And And it it says in here, um, God is saying, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous. Okay. If I was Joshua, I would need to hear that.
SPEAKER_01A lot.
SPEAKER_00Well, and then it says it again at the end. Yeah, be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Everyone can relate to that. Everyone has tried something new. Everyone has started a new job, a new school, um, a new relationship, uh, a new adventure, endeavor, something.
SPEAKER_01And business, yeah.
SPEAKER_00You always have that, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And so, yeah, we can all look at this story.
SPEAKER_01And everyone has every decision I make, am I making the right this is the right one? Well, maybe be strong and courageous is go ahead with what you decide, but you know, don't back down.
SPEAKER_00Maybe it's buying a new house.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, right, right, right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So it's also as I read this preparing, reread it. We watch, as we said before, a lot of Yankee baseball games. And who doesn't? Yeah, why wouldn't you? Um, and during those, there's a commercial for St. Jude's, and there's a little girl who's there for treatment, you know, and her mother is saying to her, You are strong and you are courageous. And she repeats that.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Right.
SPEAKER_01Yes. So as I saw that and read this, I'm thinking, maybe the mom's a fan of Joshua 1. Right? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So it also says, keep this book of the law, so keep the book of the law always on your lips.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01Meditate on it day and night. Right? So that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Are we careful to do everything written in it?
SPEAKER_00Um, no.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00No. But if you follow that, the next sentence says, then you will be prosperous and successful.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And strong and courageous again.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01No one else makes that promise.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01So. And part of the flip devotional is keeping the book of the law always with you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And the next day, October 3rd, um, Isaiah 41, 8 through 10 has one of the scriptures that I've memorized. So that's a way to keep the law always with you is to to memorize um parts of it. And I'm I'm not great at memorizing stuff, but um I I work I work at this because I want to have it readily available. Yes. Yeah. Um so it says one that says I have chosen you. It says says that twice.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Which I really like. I want to be chosen. I want peep someone to pick me. Um so for God to say, I have chosen you.
SPEAKER_01It's kind of like picking teams on the playground.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. It's like, oh. And um so the scripture that I've memorized is the last part. So do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. I'd love that so much. Yeah. Do not be afraid. I'm with you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Don't be dismayed. I'm your God.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like, yeah, you're with me, you're my God.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then I will uphold you with my righteous right hands. Like, oh.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, you know, to make it maybe, you know, if if you have a young child, right, who's scared, I am here, right? Parents say, I'm here. You don't have to be afraid, I am here, right? That's what God's telling me, right? Right. And Isaiah, you don't have to be afraid. I am with you. So God acknowledges people have fear, but remember, I'm here. And, you know, do not be afraid.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So again, comforting stuff, right?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And our challenge is to remember that when we are afraid.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Right. We may remember it when life is good. Remember it when you're afraid.
SPEAKER_00Um, the next October 4th is uh from a Psalm 27, one through three. Um just a little different bent from the other three we've done so far. Um it's this is David saying, the Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Whom shall I be afraid? So it's in instead of it being do not be afraid, it's kind of the speaking the truth out.
SPEAKER_01Correct.
SPEAKER_00Saying, This is, you know, here's the Lord is my light and my salvation.
SPEAKER_01Right? So it says, do not be afraid, you could almost say, because the Lord is my light and my salvation. Right. And David is kind of who who shall I fear? Right? Yeah. As long as I remember this, he doesn't say that, but that's part of the message, right?
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. So and then part of it that's I don't know, people love thinking of this, but he says, when the wicked advance against me, it's my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear. I will be confident. So even though things are coming against me, they're the ones that are in trouble.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Not me. I'm gonna be fine.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You know, the war break out against me, I am confident, right? And his confidence doesn't come from himself, right? It comes from the Lord, is my light and my salvation, right? Therefore, I can be confident. So again, do not fear, will not fear.
SPEAKER_00All right, October 5th, the last day this week. Um, another part of a scripture that uh I like to have in my my brain is at the end where it says, No weapon forged against me, you, will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. So no weapon formed against me will prosper. But at the beginning of this passage, Isaiah 54, says, Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, says, Yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken. So we got shaken both places, nor my covenant of peace be removed.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00I like how he did that.
SPEAKER_01Yes, says the Lord. Yes, this is God's message, right?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01So though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, that's a right big deal, right? Yet my unfailing love will not be shaken, and my covenant for peace be not be removed. Nor be covenant for peace be removed. So he's here for the long haul, right? No matter what else happens, right? And again, for us, his unfailing love for us, for me, for you will not be shaken. My covenant of peace shall not be, nor will my covenant of peace removed. It will always be there. It doesn't matter. Also, like says the Lord, who has compassion on you. Yes, yes. You know, I mean he cares for us.
SPEAKER_00Yes, right? Yeah. And we so often think that we have to like measure up that and kind of like we need to not make mistakes, we need to be as perfect as possible, and then we can go to God. But he has compassion on us. Yeah, he knows what's going on, he knows when we're afraid, he knows what's happening. You can go to him anytime.
SPEAKER_01And nothing is too small or too big, right? This is really those first five days of October. Teaches us to put our faith in him, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Pay attention, you know. And again, I think it's easy to put your faith in him when everything is really good.
SPEAKER_00Actually, I think when everything's going good, I only know if we do have faith in him. Right, right. We're just kind of coasting along.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But when it's really hard, that's when we need to step up our game.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01But it's easy to be the bright, smiley follower of God when you think everything's okay. It's hard when it's not, but that's when he's there. He's closer.
SPEAKER_00I always tell people that, you know, God wants to to hear from you when things are bad, when you, you know, are hurting and and stuff. But don't you think he wants to hear from you when things are going good?
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00I mean, it do you want to talk to someone who every time you talk to them, all they tell you is how bad stuff is?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like, wouldn't you like every once in a while for them to be like, so things are good. How are things with you? Yeah, you know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So or when your kid comes home with something exciting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know. They want to tell you, you want to hear.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So when good things are happening, tell God. Tell God. Like, thank you so much for this. I loved it so much. And yeah, talk to them then, too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's an ongoing conversation. It's just not a bad news update.
SPEAKER_00Right, right. Or uh, oh, the weather's bad. By the way, I need money.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Like, okay, the only time I ever hear from you is when you need money. I know, but you know.
SPEAKER_01So that's an example.
SPEAKER_00Yes. All right. I think that's it for this week.
SPEAKER_01That's it. A good week.
SPEAKER_00Very good. Thanks for listening to this week's Flip Devotional of the Podcast. Don't forget to subscribe, to download, um, rate, review, share with your friends and family. Um, and let's get more people out there listening. We'll talk to you next week. Bye.
