Welcome to kind of not pretty much the last week of September, just a couple of days.
SPEAKER_03Last full week.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yes. September is our month of parables and healings and other miracles. Other miracles, right? Yes. I guess parables and miracles is kind of the theme this month. And we are happy to have everyone who has been listening and downloading our podcast and stuff and um hoping to add a few more states and countries in the coming week, weeks, whatever.
SPEAKER_03And this is week 40.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yeah. So we're we're nearing the end. It's hard to believe. Um so thankful for Lexington Public Library making it possible for us to record these podcasts. Um almost every Saturday we come here.
SPEAKER_03Uh and the staff is wonderful and so so good.
SPEAKER_01They they have made it where we are pretty independent now. We can come in and uh once everything's turned on, we can get it going ourselves.
SPEAKER_03And well, you can get it going.
SPEAKER_01Um used to at the beginning, uh, we were would record and I would come back during the week and spend hours uh editing the podcast. And I wasn't even like going through and clearing up parts in between. I was just adding the music at the beginning and the end and getting it put together and putting it on the website and you know, all that. Took me hours to do it. And then um from working with them and asking questions, like we figured out a sweet, concise way to do it. So now uh after we record a podcast, it takes me about I don't know, five minutes, definitely less than 10.
SPEAKER_03Less than 10.
SPEAKER_01Uh maybe to get it all loaded um onto the website and everything. So uh it's it's been amazing and truly, truly thankful for the public library um having the equipment, having the availability, and having the staff who are so good and so willing to help us out. All right, ready you jump in?
SPEAKER_03Let's do it.
SPEAKER_01September 22nd is Matthew chapter 20, verses 29 through 34. Um, two blind men sitting by the roadside.
SPEAKER_03Also, as Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_03Well, that's you know, the Old Testament town where they marched around and destroyed the walls.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I didn't even think of that.
SPEAKER_03I would assume it's the same Jericho.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, yeah, sure. Yeah, sure. Sure. Wow, that's cool. Um, so a large crowd is following him, and there's two blind men sitting on the side of the road. And when they heard that Jesus was going by, so they have an advantage. Last week we had gentlemen who was deaf, who probably had no idea who Jesus was or what he had done, but had friends who brought him. But these blind men who just hang out on the side of the road and hear people going back and forth, hear people talking, they obviously, and this is chapter 20 of Matthew. Yeah, this is way into Jesus' um uh his ministry. Thank you, ministry. Um, they've heard and they shout, Lord, son of David, have mercy on us. So they knew who he was. Yeah, they knew what he could do. Yeah, have mercy on us.
SPEAKER_03And Jesus comes Well, even before that, the crowd rebuked them. Yes, the crowd said, Hey, don't bother him, right? Yes, yeah, more important stuff, right? Or something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And they just shouted louder. Yes, persistence pays off.
SPEAKER_01Love it, love it. And then Jesus says, What do you want me to do for you? And and up at the top in my little ditty, before you read the scripture, said, What would your answer be? If Jesus came to you right now and said, What do you want me to do for you? What would you say?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Like, wow. I don't know. But these these two blind men That'd be a good sermon, wouldn't it? We want our sight.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, specifically, direct, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, which you know makes sense. They really they can't do anything.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and there's no programs, right? There's no braille.
SPEAKER_01Right. You know, and they can't get around by themselves. And they, you know, yeah, their whole world literally will open up if they can see. So that's so I, you know, I'm like, yes, as for your sight, I I think that's the the best thing. And then that said Jesus had compassion on them.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And he touched their eyes again, like you said last week, he touches people. He touched their eyes, and immediately they received their sight and followed him.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01So it it's funny, sometimes these scriptures, it's like, I mean, I I literally, well, practically, just read the scripture.
SPEAKER_03Yes. There's not much more you can say than that.
SPEAKER_01Exactly.
SPEAKER_03I mean, it's pretty clear. So But I you know, one is is what you said, know what you you know, if you s have a specific ask, if Jesus said, What do you want? No and answer. Be prepared, right? These guys knew, they asked, and they didn't say, Lord, if you are able, we want our sight. Lord, if you care, Lord, we want our sight clear. Four simple words. We want our sight, right? Jesus touched their eyes, they received their sight, and followed him. Yeah.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_03May have done that later, right? But they followed him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And it's things like this that is part of the reason the devotional I wrote is just the scripture.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_01What more do you need?
SPEAKER_03Right.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_03Like if you just I mean, someone else could have this, Jesus stopped, called them, what do you want? Our site, compassion, touch, healing. And then seven pages about the significance of that. But the significance is one, Jesus stopped, right? Even though the crowd told the men, be quiet, they did not listen to the crowd. They had a specific request for Jesus. And he wants to do, right? He wants to do that for us. So yeah. I mean, I I don't know what anyone could write that's more powerful than that.
SPEAKER_01Right, right. And look, this is what, five verses from the Bible. So if you're trying to read your Bible on your own, and you know, one of the hangups I think are, you know, how much should I read? What should I, you know, blah, blah, blah. There's not a set answer for that. I mean, I really feel like these five verses are pretty powerful, all on their own. Five simple verses.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's really six, but that's okay.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_03Because you read 29 and 34, so it's not subtraction.
SPEAKER_02I hate that.
SPEAKER_03I know, me too. All the time. I cannot 29, 34, 33. Yeah, it's six. It sure looks like five every other time. But the the point is, yeah, read this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You know, and these aren't the only six verses in the Bible that are powerful. Right, right. I mean, one of the values of the Bible is every six verses, each six verses is powerful.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. One time when um our older daughter was she she wanted to read her Bible every day. And she's like, I just, I don't know, you know, it's just hard. I I don't know how much to read. And I said, why don't you just, you know, wherever you are, just start reading and read until you get to a ah or a aha or a mmm, and and stop there. Don't don't pass that up and just keep going and ignore that. So, you know, even this much, if you were reading this and you got to Jesus stopped and called and said, What do you want me to do for you? Right there, that makes me want to stop.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And go, wow, I'm just gonna sit with this for a while. And you went, you know, stop reading your Bible that day at that point, stop and sit with God and go, wow.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's not a novel.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01And and there's not a requirement of you, you know, like at school, you have to read so many chapters a day or a week or whatever. Um, yeah, you're reading it to learn about God, yeah, and to get your relationship closer to Him. So read till that happens.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. That was a long time on the first day, but that's we can't keep this up for a week. September 23rd is Luke 4, 38 through 44. Um this is uh healing of demons, um, which comes up several times.
SPEAKER_03Yes. And the demons know who he is.
SPEAKER_01That's yeah, I think that's like the huge lesson from this.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03And this is Simon who is Peter. Who was Peter, but he's not Peter yet.
SPEAKER_01And I made note of the the time frame because I don't know if it's significant, but said Jesus left the synagogue, so it must have been synagogue day.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Which would have been the Sabbath. The Sabbath. Right.
SPEAKER_01Um, went to the home of Simon, Peter.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01His mother-in-law was sick, and he first he heals her.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And she um gets up and cooks something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03To wait on them, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And then at sunset, right. All right, so go from the beginning of the day to the end of the day.
SPEAKER_03Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01Um, the people brought Jesus all who had various kinds of sicknesses. So just all sorts. And he laid his hands on each one and healed them. So a lot of the healings are individuals. Yes. It's like this one person or these two people. But here we have no idea how many people he healed.
SPEAKER_03Correct. We just know laying his hands on each one. So he took time for each person. Right.
SPEAKER_01And then there were demons that came out of many people.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And they shouted, You are the son of God.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. So I've um I've seen on social media um it says that, you know, even the demons believe in God.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01So it's not believing in God that gets you into heaven.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because the d demons believe in them.
SPEAKER_03Right. They know who he is.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. It's the following.
SPEAKER_01It's following him and loving him, and yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then it says at daybreak, so this the next day.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But also this part is he rebuked them and they listened to him, right? Because they knew he was the Messiah. He was the chosen, right?
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_03And I remember in high school English said when you read something, um, you know, there's protagonists, kind of the hero.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03Pay attention to parts of a book where the enemy, the antagonist of the other protagonist, right? The enemy says something positive about him. Because that's going to be really, very true. And the same thing, uh ally of the protagonist says something negative, listen. Right? So here's just a literary thing. I mean, it's, you know, that the enemy of Jesus essentially recognize him and says something positive and obey him, which just builds up, because they wouldn't do that necessarily, right? They're acknowledging it, even though it's not to their benefit to do so.
SPEAKER_01Interesting. Hmm.
SPEAKER_03So anyway, daybreak.
SPEAKER_01So at daybreak, he went out to a solitary place, which, if you read the scriptures, that happens pretty frequently. It probably happened every day, and they just didn't write it down. That happened every day. But um, and people were looking for him. Um, and he said, I I have to go. I have to give the good news to other towns. Yeah. So I I I gotta move on.
SPEAKER_03Because they wanted him to stay, stay with us, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You know, why wouldn't you?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. But he kept on preaching the synagogues of Judea, right?
SPEAKER_01So all right, September 24th, Luke chapter 4, 31 through 37. Uh we have more demons.
SPEAKER_03More demons.
SPEAKER_01You know, I I don't I don't know. You you read a lot about demons in the Bible. Where are they now?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I I don't know, and and I really I don't know what is the difference in gospel times when Jesus was on earth and all the demons and and now I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Be an interesting question for Jim Holsinger as a physician. I mean, it it's um, but you know, these are impure spirits who recognize him, you know. Um could someone say, well, cancer is a demon? Right. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. All right, we'll ponder that, maybe ask some people. Um, maybe there are some learned, intelligent people listening that have many thoughts. If they're listening to this, there's many there um that could share with us.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's kind of one of those areas that uh I mean, truthfully, it kind of wanna dance around.
SPEAKER_03Like uh, I want to avoid this right, and let's topple some people and maybe we'll provide that feedback.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But he is in Capernaum, a town in Galilee, uh on the Sabbath, teaching, which apparently that's okay to do. Says they were amazed at his teaching that his words had authority, which I find interesting. It's like, okay, is it just how he said it, or I think it came across as somebody who really knows.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Is what his words have authority.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You know, that he's worth stopping and listening.
SPEAKER_01And then it says, in the synagogue, there was a man possessed by a demon.
SPEAKER_03Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01I mean, people wouldn't think that. That they would be in the synagogue.
SPEAKER_03Everyone had to go to the synagogue, right? I mean, it was an expectation, right? But the demon, right? He cried out at the top of his voice, go away.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. What do you want with us? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the holy one of God. I mean, he's yelling this.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And and Jesus says, Be quiet, go out of him. Um, and it says the the people were amazed and and said to each other, what words these are, oh, what authority he has, blah, blah. Were they afraid? That it doesn't sound like they were afraid. I just feel like personally, I would have been, I would have been amazed, but I think I would have had some fear. Like, oh my gosh, what just happened?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_03And all the people were amazed and said to each other, you know, they could have whispered, wow, did you see that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03What words these are. What authority, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And maybe the impure spirit was the more common thing then as well. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_03So there's some familiarity with the right.
SPEAKER_02Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Again, healed another person, right? Called out a demon, right? And they obey him.
SPEAKER_01Yes, so he clearly has authority over them.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And if demons obey him, should we?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. Clearly. Yeah. Clearly. Um.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And if demons obey him and know he's the holy one of God, then anything we come up against, if we speak the name of Jesus, yeah, should obey him.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01See, this stuff is deep. This stuff is like Yes.
SPEAKER_03And it's very hard to communicate without volumes and volumes. Right. But you're right, right? Again, it's it's the obedience and response, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And you know, Jesus, son of God, son of man. You know, we're not the you know, we're children of God, but we're not right the son of God. But do we have that same authority?
SPEAKER_01Um again, scriptures say and I think it's maybe Ephesians says that uh we have the same power that raised Jesus from the dead.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Speaking of raising people from the dead, September 25th, Luke 7, 11 through 17. Um Jesus went to a town called Nain.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Aren't there Nain crackers now?
SPEAKER_01Not that I know of. Oh, that was a big kind of but um so his disciples and a large crowd went along with him, and as he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And um I I looked up, is it buyer?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, funeral pyre. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Byer?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I didn't know what that was, but it said it was just a stand that a body would be placed on.
SPEAKER_03It's kind of we've replaced it where you put the coffin on, something like at a funeral.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But um, yeah, so they didn't do the whole coffin thing back then. So they just had the body laying on this and they were carrying it. And um it said his heart went out to the widow.
SPEAKER_03Right. This is a widow, right? Struggling anyway, I'm sure. Right.
SPEAKER_01And her only son.
SPEAKER_03Her only son. So this is all she has. And there is no, you know, there is no support network in place. Um, so she's obviously upset her son has died. She's also, you know, so I think she's afraid what happens next. And that contributes to Jesus, I think. Right. His heart went out to her, right? And he touched the funeral pyramid, right?
SPEAKER_01And said, get up, and the um dead man sat up, began to talk. Okay, I put like again, were people afraid? Like, is this freaky?
SPEAKER_03I would think it must be.
SPEAKER_01But it never says that. It's well, it says people were filled with awe and and praise God, and and and yes, so maybe I'm just a fearful little person. Um I get scared easily. Um, but like this, I mean, this is big. And he did it in front of everyone. You know, there were others where he pulled them aside. Yes, this was, yeah, everyone's this is there's a large crowd following him. There's a large crowd for the funeral, I'm sure.
SPEAKER_03And our medical knowledge is greater than it was then, but they knew life and death. I mean, there's you know, I think some of them say, well, he probably wasn't dead.
SPEAKER_01Well, okay.
SPEAKER_03But you don't get to this place.
SPEAKER_01Why didn't he set up before Jesus told him to?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, right. Sorry. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So I I looked up the Ephesians first that I was thinking of, and it's chapter one, um, verses. I don't know, I would start at if I was reading this, I would start at verse 15. Um, and this is Paul talking to the Ephesians, and down in verse 18-19, um, he says, I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance and his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead. To me, that that says we have power as well.
SPEAKER_03So and that word B-I-E-R may be pronounced almost like beer.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Okay. All right, September 26, uh, John chapter 6, verses 1 through 13. Uh the feeding of the 5,000.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, so obviously, this is something he does in front of a big group. Do does the big group understand what's going on? Maybe not. Um, but the disciples do.
SPEAKER_03The disciples do. The boy does.
SPEAKER_01And the boy does. And was the boy the only one in this large group that brought food with him?
SPEAKER_03Interesting. I remember having this conversation with our friend Randy.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03And they when he was in seminary, I think this is correct, that they discussed this. And part of this is did people see the boy bring forth his five loaves and two fish?
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh. And so other people brought.
SPEAKER_03I got some stuff. Yeah. And it really is, if that's the story, this is the origin of the potluck. But, you know, so and and even that, it's not the same as as we read it, right? But it's just the idea that 5,000, and it's men. Right. So more than 5,000. Yeah, because it's they traveled, and you know, there's no daycare, so they had those. Obviously. Yeah. Because we got this boy. Yeah. You know, so so maybe they had stuff and they brought it and shared it, or they didn't. Right. And when I'm praying, I will visualize Jesus breaking off a piece of bread from the loaf. And a piece comes off, but the loaf gets no smaller. You know, there's always, you know, more to give, you know, so I think this is obviously probably a story many people have heard, right?
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_03Many people. Um, and even at the beginning, he asks Philip, what what should we do? And again, people not laugh at, but they look at the disciples, oh my god, you know, Peter, oh my god, you know, even this case. Philip says, it takes a year's wages, right? You know, or half a year's wages to buy enough bread for everybody, right? And bread was a real staple. We've said that before, right? Right. Um, and I don't think that should be perceived as negative by Philip, right?
SPEAKER_01Right. Being realistic.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know, yeah, you know, it's kind of like, I don't know what your plan is, but we don't have half a year's wages.
SPEAKER_01But he had a plan.
SPEAKER_03He had a plan.
SPEAKER_01But you know, says Jesus knew. He knew what's gonna happen. But he wanted to include Philip and the other disciples in it. It wasn't here, let me take care of this. Yeah. And so I think that's true today.
SPEAKER_03God wants to include us, he wants us to partner with him.
SPEAKER_01And you've said many times, God doesn't need you, God doesn't need me. No, no, he can do everything that needs to be done.
SPEAKER_03He could have given every family whatever they wanted to eat at that time. All right, we get a setup. Think about what you like to have. There it is. You know, I mean, when he was tempted by Satan, you know, the angels will come down and get we know that. Yeah, you know, that's not that's not what is supposed to happen.
SPEAKER_01Right, right. But yeah, but he wants to include and he wants you to be a a part of it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So he he takes the the bread and the fish, blesses it, and gives it to and I'd like to stop and think about the disciples.
SPEAKER_03You know, we started with five little loaves, two fish, and we're still giving bread out. We're still giving stuff out, right? Yeah, you know, yeah, I mean that's and in some ways I'm jealous of the disciples.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yes.
SPEAKER_03Because, you know, I haven't experienced that. I've read it I don't know how many times, but I haven't experienced that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And had more left over, it seems, says 12 baskets that they started with.
SPEAKER_0312 baskets, and again, back then the basket was a suitcase or a wheelbarrow as well, right? It's what you carried stuff in, right? So it wasn't like a basket, you know, the the little basket at the checkout. It's it's a you know, so who knows? But had left over. And this morning, for the first time, that speaks to the abundance of Jesus.
SPEAKER_00Yes, right.
SPEAKER_03This is a story of about Jesus' abundance, not about feeding 5,000.
SPEAKER_02Right. Wow, I love that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You know, and it's his abundant love. This is an example, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I mean, could could almost use that as a like tithing sermon.
SPEAKER_03Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01You know, you give me what you have and I can make it grow. And you end up with more than you started with.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Before you gave him his part.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. Beautiful. All right. September twenty-seventh is Luke chapter five, verses one through eleven. Um I put that this was probably the first miracle that the disciples experienced. Um, this was when um they were they were being called. Um and Jesus is coming around. He uh he has a crowd with them. So he's already known known. Yeah. So he has a following. Um and he he comes up and he gets into one of the boats and moves out a little bit to speak to the crowd.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, just in Luke 4, that's when he healed Simon's mother, right?
SPEAKER_01Okay, all right. So they saw that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so the word is spreading, right? And most of them claim the good news, right? So I mean the word's out, right?
SPEAKER_01Okay. So he's already called Simon uh they're already following him. Yes. Kind of. But they're still fishing.
SPEAKER_03Right. Uh yeah, because that's what they do. That's their job, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Okay. I'll have to kind of look at that because when he when he says when he goes by the boats another time. And they said they left everything and followed him.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It says in this one. Yeah, so it's not but he healed Simon's mother-in-law. Hmm.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. I think Steve's gonna research a little bit. We'll we'll ponder that. So he's talking to them, to the the people, and then when he finished, he told Simon, go go out into the deep water and let down your nets. And Simon says, We've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. He says, but because you say so, because you say so, I'll do it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break and they had to call their partners to come out and help them.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So another um story that kind of builds on the abundance of God.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We went out on our own, we caught nothing.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01But because you say, go back out, and this is during the day, we we fished all night, which is fishing time.
SPEAKER_03And it's Simon, it's not Peter yet, but it's Simon. Even his response, if you say so, I will do it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Right. Isn't a full endorsement of Jesus?
SPEAKER_01Right. Right. Right. No, it's kind of like, all right, whatever.
SPEAKER_03It's easier for me to do this than not do this. But in 430 is when he heals in the the temple. Jesus healed. That was the demon-possessed man in the temple. Okay. Right? Heals many, right? And Simon's mother-in-law. So he heals Simon's mother-in-law, right? So, and the healing of Simon's mother-in-law paves the way for Simon Peter's call. So it is Peter, right? And now we're at 1 through 11, right? So he's healed already. Okay. In the temple, Simon's mother, and the word got out he's healing people, they all showed up, right?
SPEAKER_01So So I I was I was wrong in the fact that this was the first miracle that they might have experienced.
SPEAKER_03Because he healed many, had the temple, which we read, right? On the 23rd. Heals Simon's mother, right?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Which is here, right? No, we did that or sometime. Oh, that was it. 438, right? But we did 430 sometime recently, right? So you end up, there's an experience. Oh, that was on the 24th. So, and he's doing this in public. Right? Because the temple's obviously in public, what he's, you know, synagogue, and then he heals many, so everyone got the word, he's healing people, and then he does this with the fish, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. And in Matthew, uh, it goes from Jesus being tested in the wilderness to him preaching, to him calling the disciples.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01So in Matthew, it would have been their first miracle.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So, all right.
SPEAKER_03But it's interesting again, it's in Simon who fishes for a living, right? Caught this massive load of fish, but he saw the value of Jesus, right? Left everything and followed Jesus.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes. Yeah. And when Jesus said to Simon, um, don't be afraid, which is interesting. I mean I think don't be afraid should have been said in the time when the dead person came back to life and stuff. But in this, Jesus says, Don't be afraid of what? But from now on, you will fish for people. I was wondering what was Simon's or Peter's, what was his understanding of what that meant?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't think he knew. But they pulled their balls on shore and left everything and and including the all the fish they caught, they left.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_03Someone got lucky.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. But I I mean, clearly people heard this, they remembered it because they wrote it down that Jesus said this. From now on, you'll fish for people. So I guess maybe later. It's like, remember when Jesus said that? That's what we're doing. Okay, now I get it. So maybe they didn't have an understanding of it then. But later. And of course the gospels were written after the fact. Um so maybe then that's when they they understood what it meant.
SPEAKER_03And maybe the fear would be you're leaving everything. Right? I mean you're gonna do something completely different. Right?
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03You know, so is it you know, the translation is don't be afraid. But you know, I don't know this, but people tell you what the original text had, right? Is it reluctant?
SPEAKER_01Is it actually maybe it goes back to it says Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, Go away from me. Yes, I'm a sinful man. It's like, oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_03I bet that does it. Go. That's a good answer.
SPEAKER_01I bet that's it. And then Jesus says, Don't be afraid. It's okay. You're you're gonna come with me. We got this.
SPEAKER_03And we're gonna do great stuff, right?
SPEAKER_01Oh, beautiful, beautiful, I love it. All right, last day for this week, September 28th. Uh, Mark chapter 8, 22 through 26. Um, and this is another healing of a blind man.
SPEAKER_03Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01And this one is kind of interesting because it's it's still Jesus doing the healing, but it appears that it takes two tries for it to work.
SPEAKER_03Um and it's also said, what do you see? I see like trees walking.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Which probably means he w hasn't always been blind.
SPEAKER_01Right, right. Because he said, I see people, they look like trees walking. Yeah. And again, Jesus spits.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know. We we don't do a lot of that today.
SPEAKER_03Oh, and maybe we should.
SPEAKER_01Maybe we should do some spitting, some spitting and he'll go to the ER. We're just kidding. Okay. That's a joke. All right. Um, so then it said once more, he put his hands on the man's eyes, and then his sight was restored. But it took two tries.
SPEAKER_03Well, again, I don't know this at all, but this story only has two characters.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03Jesus and the man. That's all we got, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And it took two times to heal, right? There's another time we read where the disciples couldn't heal someone, but Jesus could, and he chastised them, ye have a little faith, right? So are we doubting Jesus' faith?
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_03So then you could say, does this give us any insight to the other character in this scripture, which is the man who is blind? And maybe the two healings is a reflection of the man's faith in Jesus. And Jesus, what do you see? Because he doesn't ask other people that. How does it feel walking? You know, there's no check on that.
SPEAKER_01So maybe I think because he jumped up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but still, or or the deaf guy. Is everything clear?
SPEAKER_01You know?
SPEAKER_03You know. Can you hear me now? Right. You know.
SPEAKER_01So maybe it's the original ATT commercial.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So maybe it's more of uh does it tell us more about the man?
SPEAKER_01That's interesting. Yeah, I never thought of that, but I love that. That makes perfect sense. It really does.
SPEAKER_03All right. Week 40 done.
SPEAKER_01Very good. We will finish September next week and begin October. Thing for October is of course fears.
SPEAKER_03Fears, nice. Because this is our 40th week, but it's our 39th week of the calendar. So we're three quarters of the way through.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Very good. All right. Thanks for listening to this week's Flip Devotional The Podcast. Don't forget to subscribe, share with friends, um, download. Is the that's how we'll know if you are in some place that we haven't mentioned and you're listening, you're like, they never mentioned uh and I expect my cards.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Whether they're in Ontario, Montreal, and I think some is further west, British, not British Columbia, maybe Alberta.
SPEAKER_01There you go. Family. You need to be jumping on here. Um so yeah, and really we just want more people to be a part of it, just to listen and um get people thinking, get people in the word, get people uh thinking about their relationship with God.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
