We are starting September. And I was all excited because we actually are doing September 1st. So we're starting a new month, which has a new theme. Um, the theme for September is Parables and Healings. Uh, so these first few are all parables.
SPEAKER_02And And what is a parable?
SPEAKER_00Well, wait, before that, okay, I want to thank the people who sent in fan mail. Yeah. We've gotten several pieces of fan mail, pretty exciting. And we added two states, New Mexico and New Jersey.
SPEAKER_02Correct. New Jersey stepped up.
SPEAKER_00Kind of funny, we we got the the two new states. Yeah. So that was fun. Um, we're trying to get some of those Rocky Mountain states. Correct. And, you know, I actually know someone in Colorado, so you know, it would be nice if they just downloaded one. Um, and I'm not sure I know anyone anywhere else, but I don't know anyone in Oregon, and they've been with us since the beginning.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Um, so um yeah, we we posted a picture of the United States map and all the states that have downloaded um flip devotional the podcast at least once. Um so yeah, just for fun, we're trying to get the whole United States. Come on.
SPEAKER_01Correct.
SPEAKER_00Come on.
SPEAKER_02Correct.
SPEAKER_00It should be possible.
SPEAKER_02Well, let's get New Hampshire.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, there's another new one. Are there any other new ones?
SPEAKER_02I don't think so.
SPEAKER_00Okay, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico. Our friends in New Mexico downloaded after they saw our map and saw that we were trying to get some more states. So and I posted Thank you, Hallie and Caroline.
SPEAKER_02Yes, thank you very much, Allie Caroline. I shared that you know, I'm from New Jersey. Someone should at least act like they're listening.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And someone did.
SPEAKER_02Someone did.
SPEAKER_00So that's pretty exciting.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00All right. So September Parables. Um, what is a parable, Steve?
SPEAKER_02It's a story that's designed to teach a spiritual or moral truth. It's not necessarily true. So these aren't actual events. These are it's a teaching tool used by Jesus to tell people about the kingdom, but they may not actually ever have occurred.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So I think it's important to realize this is part of the Bible we know is not true.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and it's funny because some people um say, well, I don't think everything in the Bible is necessarily true. It's like, well, you know, if you're saying, for example, a parable, okay, a parable is not true, but it's actually in the Bible, and it's actually a story that was told, and it was told to teach a lesson in order to teach something. So, okay, if that's your point, fine. But you know, don't go right, don't go beyond that. Um, yeah. All right, are we ready to jump in?
SPEAKER_01Ready, let's do this.
SPEAKER_02September 1st um is actually uh not a parable, but it's telling it kind of opens up, explains the what's going to take place thereafter and the value of parables. And parables are in Matthew, Mark, Luke for sure, maybe there's a couple in John, but it's clearly something that uh a tool Jesus used to help people understand.
SPEAKER_00So in Matthew 13, 10 through 17, um the disciples came to Jesus and said, Why do you speak to people in parables? And so he explains. Uh so I I know there's some people who didn't know like exactly what a parable was, and they or they didn't know um that they were just stories told to teach a lesson. And and Jesus explains it right here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He says, because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven have been given to you, not to them.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00That's that's kind of a big deal.
SPEAKER_02So it's almost is a different audience, right? The parable is a design for people who you know have access to the kingdom of heaven, right? So it's it's is it used to to further someone's faith and understanding of the relationship with Jesus, as opposed to just, you know, here's a story that took place as kind of a way to introduce Jesus and faith to others. This is sounds like, and it does say, those with eyes, let them see, and ears are blessed, right? So let them see, let them hear. Meaning you must, I guess, have some foundational knowledge or something. But I think it's for me, that's one message is it's just not it can be used to teach anybody, but it does require explanation. And quite often the disciples didn't understand them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, which is something I was gonna point out. It's kind of funny. It what he's saying is it's been revealed to you like you should know it, and yet when they hear a parable, they're they go, so what does that mean?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, the companion verse for this, and if you don't know, um Flip Devotional Facebook page each month is posted a calendar for that month and that has a scripture um for each day. So if you read Flip Devotional last year and you want something different to read, but you still kind of want to be in the uh reading the same themes, um, or if you're reading Flip Devotional and you want something more to read, uh you can go there and read the scriptures that are listed. So for September 1st, it's Mark 4, 33 and 34, that says, um, with many similar parables, Jesus spoke the word to them as much as they could understand. So it kind of alludes to they're not going to totally understand at all. Says he did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything. So I thought that was kind of a good explanation of um why there's so many parables and um and with both of those scriptures, just kind of the purpose of them. Um, so he's teaching, he's telling, but in a way that you have to kind of be connected to understand what he's saying. And and that he takes the disciples in and is like, okay, I understand you're not gonna get all of this. So here, come here, I'll I'll explain it to you. Yeah, which is sweet.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and in our own faith journey, we do that with other people who may not truly understand what it means or have questions about it. And you know, pastors do it for the congregation, so it's it's it's not necessarily um something that just happened then, it still continues today.
SPEAKER_00Very good. So September 2nd leads to the first parable, actual parable, called the parable of the sower. And uh it's in a couple of um of the gospels. Um, we are referencing the one in Luke chapter eight. Um so this is a farmer is sowing seed and he scatters it, and um, you know, kind of like when I tried to do a little garden, it's like I don't know what I'm doing really. And some of the stuff grew and some of the stuff didn't grow.
SPEAKER_02And and back then everyone understood how to grow stuff. Right. Even if you didn't, everyone knew that's you know, so so I think this is using something that people could easily relate to.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah, yeah. Um, so he's sowing seed, and there's four different ways that it could land, yes, it could be planted or sown, I guess.
SPEAKER_02Um, probably throwing them by hand.
SPEAKER_00Right. And he has this area and they have the cutesy little seed spreader.
SPEAKER_02They have a seed spreader or a little crank thing that's really cool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, so but so when you do that, and he probably has the farmer has a plot of land that's his, and there may be a path in it, right? Because we talk about a path, we talk about rocky ground, right? And thorns are gonna be some sort of weed, I guess, right? And there's a place with good soil, so yeah.
SPEAKER_00So something I thought about when reading this was there's a 25% chance of a positive result.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. If they're all equal.
SPEAKER_00But but the Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_02That's true. But it's also that that there's a different things that that take place when you plant things. And the parable, again, is to teach a spiritual lesson, right? The truth, a spiritual moral truth. So I think it's great when he tells the story, then he explains, right, exactly what each of these mean, and then it makes a ton of sense, right? You know, uh the story has, you know, the path, he plants them on the path, he plants them on the rocky ground, the thorns, and the good soil. And the good soil is really, really effective, right? A lot of stuff grows from the good soil. The path, the rocky ground, and the thorns, they don't grow as well. And then he explains it to you, right? He tells you that um, one, the seed is the it's the word of God. So here it is. So here's the word of God. And and these aren't explanations, these aren't bad things, these are just realities that it happens to people. One, the path is like the devil, right? Comes take it away, right? Because there's nothing there, no foundation. I want to get rid of that. So the devil's working to take that seed away. The rocky ground has nowhere to for roots to grow, right? So a person, the rocky ground, and they say, receives it with joy. They hear it, right? But they have no foundation, they have no root to build it in, right? So, so if you're looking at that person, how can we help them get a foundation or a root? And the thorns, and this is really, I think, the best one for us today, life worries, riches, pleasures, things get too busy, right? And those are thorns that interfere with your faith, right? Those are and you know, and if you look at us today, there's so many things that take away from our time with the Lord, right? And the good soil is your relationship, right? Your your your foundation. Uh, you you hear the word, the seeds, you retain it, and it just yields and yields and yields things in your life. So I think it's an example, and I think it really helps folks like us who are further along in our faith journey to interact with other people.
SPEAKER_00Very good. Very good. And uh from reading the scripture uh the day before, I suspect that the explanation um was given to the disciples afterwards. Yes, and then Luke as a disciple when he wrote his gospel, it was like, so here's the parable Jesus told, and here's the explanation he gave us. Yes, is my thought about this.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah, yeah, very much so. But again, tells it, explains it. You know.
SPEAKER_00All right. Um, September 3rd, Luke again, chapter 15, 11 through 24. This is the parable of the lost son or the prodigal son, and again is in um a couple of gospels at least.
SPEAKER_02Um and quite often this is the third of three. The first one is person loses, a sheep is gone, one of a hundred, a gold coin, one of ten, and this is now one of two.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02This is the third one of that. And I think we've done the first two previously. I guess if you've done them, there has to be previously.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah, I think so. Yeah. Um the just as a side note, um, there is a book by Henry Nowen called The Return of the Prodigal Son. Um fabulous book.
SPEAKER_02Looked like we had some tech issues. I heard a little beep beep.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there is. I don't know. I don't know why. I don't know what to do about it.
SPEAKER_02So let's just go on.
SPEAKER_00Um The Return of the Prodigal Sun. Um is it's a short book. It I did it with a group as a study. Um and it's it's very good for that. Um the cover of the book and um a lot of what Henry Nowen, and I love Henry Nowen, a great author. Um a lot of what he writes in it is based on the cover, which is the painting by Rembrandt. Um it's in St. Petersburg.
SPEAKER_02Um it's I think that's Leningrad now.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02It's okay.
SPEAKER_00Um it is eight and a half feet by six and a half feet. It's a huge painting.
SPEAKER_02I mean most walls and homes are eight feet high, so it's higher than that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um it's it alone is almost a reason for me to go there. Uh I just can't imagine being able to see that painting in person. Um when you look at it, uh, you can, you know, pull it up on your computer. Um there's things kind of hidden in the back of it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I remember you saying that.
SPEAKER_00Um and it just it really brings out more meaning of the the story. So side note, Henry Nowin book, The Return of the Prodigal Son, and the painting um of the prodigal son. All right. So oh, I just I mean, obviously, sermons have been done on this. Uh, but the prodigal son decided he wanted his inheritance early, uh, which was actually kind of a slap in the face to his father. Um but he he took it. Um, he was the younger son, and then he left and he wasted his money away, and then he decided uh he wanted to come back, that his the servants of his father had more than he had, and he wanted to come back just as a servant. He didn't expect to come back as a son, and all he could do, he was feeding pigs, right?
SPEAKER_02I mean, that's you know, so yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, and so he comes back, and it says while he was still a long way off, so he hadn't gotten to his father yet, he hadn't even said that he was sorry.
SPEAKER_02Um but he said he was gonna tell that to his father, right?
SPEAKER_00Right, but he hadn't done that yet.
SPEAKER_02No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_00And his father didn't necessarily know that that's what he was gonna do, but said his father saw him and was filled with compassion and ran to him, threw his arms around him and kissed him. And then the son says, I've sinned, you know, I'm sorry. Um, I'm I'm not even worthy to be your son. And the father is like, Oh, yes, no, come on, we are gonna celebrate because you are back, and so they have a big celebration.
SPEAKER_02He was dead, now he's alive. Yes. I mean, talks about that's how it's used, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_00Which uh as a parent, if that would be awful. Yeah, yeah. Um, now he willingly left, but that's the free will that we have as God's children. He has said, you know, I'm not gonna make you stay, I'm not gonna make you do I want you to stay, but I want you to do it because you want to. Right. And so we have free will. The the son had free will to go and do whatever it was he wanted. He came to his senses, it says, and then he came back. And again, this is a parable, um but the father is represents God, and that's exactly how God is. If we go away, if we wander off, we go off the path, and we decide to come back, he runs to us. Yes, and he embraces us, and he is so excited to have us back.
SPEAKER_02Um isn't somewhere else there's a reference to the angels celebrate when someone is saying, you know, very similar to this, right? Yes, we're we're gonna have a celebration. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And then we go to September 4th, which is the rest of the story.
SPEAKER_02Not quite the rest of the story for me. So go ahead.
SPEAKER_00The continuation of the story. Um because so far it's all oh yay, he's back, and you know, we get that. But then this part, uh the older son.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, who stayed.
SPEAKER_00Who stayed and worked and did what he was supposed to. Um, the older son comes out and like, what's going on? Like he heard the noise and like what's happening?
SPEAKER_02And and he asked that of a servant.
SPEAKER_00Because he was out in the field, and that's probably all that was close to him. Yeah, right, right, right. But he was working. Yeah. He says, Oh, your brother has come and your father's killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound. And the older brother got upset and refused to go in. And in the painting um by Rembrandt. The older son is is in there and he's kind of back just a little bit and it's darker um in in in in that part. It just again really helps you see the kind of the emotions going on. Um and the so the older brother is upset that his father is doing all this celebrating and say you didn't do that with me.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00I've been here the whole time.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00But you know, I I I don't get it. And so the father says, God says, You are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate because your brother was dead and is alive again.
SPEAKER_02He was lost and he was found.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. I wonder if there is a thing called the older son syndrome.
SPEAKER_02Um yeah, and it's interesting. I remember when we used to do stuff with our youth group years ago. Someone said, Well, all I have to do is accept Jesus before I die and I go to heaven.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02So, and this was a youth, so why do it now? Why, you know, you know, and it's almost this, you know, let me go ahead and do things that maybe I shouldn't, but I can ask for forgiveness and go on from there, you know. And it's interesting for me, I read this story, I don't know how many times. I looked up the word prodigal. Looked up the word prodigal. It's wastefully extravagant. I had never heard that in a sermon, never heard anyone say that's what prodigal means, you know. And in fact, here comes the prodigal son, right? But it really is someone, but even this is is is it is the question, why accept Jesus today?
SPEAKER_00You know, in some people's eyes, they think they're missing out on fun.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00They think, you know, probably what this youth was thinking, you know, I'm gonna have fun, I'm gonna do what I want now, and then just you know, before I die, I can accept Jesus and be okay. Um it's like, hmm.
SPEAKER_02But you don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You don't know. And I said, when this isn't the end of the story, it is in the Bible. This is where, you know, moves on. But the question has to become what became of the two brothers? Right? I mean, what happened? Did the younger son become a a worker on the farm? You know, maybe some other, but you know, right. And the older son became the owner, the overseer, the responsible person for the whole farm, you know, whatever the, you know, the vineyard, whatever they had, right? The fields. And that's part of what just because you he returned, you know, he was lost and found, dead alive. It doesn't mean you were your life is going to be wonderful necessarily. You're not going to go back to what you had beforehand, right? When he was lost, you know. So I think sometimes we don't really talk about that part of the story, is we don't know what happened.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02Because we don't know. But but I think it's important just to be aware that the older son is unhappy with the situation, right? But a year later, he may be understanding we celebrated, but he doesn't get everything else that I'm gonna get, because he already has, you know. And our faith is that way, you know, so we need to be satisfied and understand what we got. But people who we know who've made some bad decisions in life, they still live with those consequences. Right. It it doesn't go away no matter how much better they are, they still have those consequences.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. And that's what people like the youth didn't think about. Right. Um yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, good story. Remember you were reading that book about the painting.
SPEAKER_00All right, September 5th. We're still in Luke. Um Luke chapter 18, 1 through 8, the parable of the persistent widow. Um I wrote the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's uh kind of how she she comes across.
SPEAKER_02Um even in this story, you know, it's a judge and the widow, right? And the judge doesn't care. And the judge says, I don't care. Right? I don't care. Right. But he cared only because she he got tired of seeing her, right? You know, and therefore he's gonna give her justice. You don't know what happened, right? But you know, and that's just the persistence. You stick to it, you stick to it, you stick to it. You are persistent in your faith, right? And that's for me, that's the message of the widow. Be persistent in your faith.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I had two scriptures. They they aren't the companion um verses because I the companion verses I try to use, um, scriptures that were not used in the flip devotional and weren't used as another companion verse, um, but these were two verses that kind of gave the same message. Uh, one is Luke 11, 8, uh, and this is Jesus talking, and he says, I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity, he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.
SPEAKER_02Um That was uh The guy who knocks on the door at late at night. Everything's locked up. We're asleep, we're in bed, boom, leave me alone.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um and the scripture after that says, so I say to you, ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be open. Um then also in Ephesians chapter 6, verse 18, it says, and pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests, with this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people. So keep on praying, um, keep on asking.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And there's there's a stu. Well, Abraham um asked God persistently to to not destroy um Sodom and Gore. Yeah. He said, Well, you know, whether there's 50 people, where if there's 40, well, if there's 30, da da da. Um, you know, Abraham was was persistent and and kind of changed God's mind. I mean, he's like, okay, I won't destroy it if uh turned out there weren't that many people.
SPEAKER_02Um maybe God knew that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But still, I feel like there's another story where and I think it was the Old Testament where someone asked and and God said God changed his mind because he asked. Uh, and I just thought of it so I didn't look it up. I'm not exactly sure where it is, but um I've heard people talk about that a little bit, where they're like, you know, there's things are predestined, and it's like, well, if it's already laid out, why pray and ask for something? Um, and these are things I don't have answers for, but it clearly states the three scriptures I just shared and other places, that we are to pray, we are to ask, we are to ask persistently that that matters to God, I guess.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, right, right, and I mean here, uh Jonah, God sees the repentance of Nineveh and turns away from his destruction, he announced. So that was a change. Exodus 32, 14, God relents from the disaster he threatened against the Israelites after Moses intercedes, right? Yes, yes. So it means, you know, God listens. Yes. God listens. And he, you know, so and if everything is predestined, it's all gonna, and that's always been a debate, probably philosophy classes, still debate it. But the point is there's examples of God listening to what men are asking, people are asking of him, and changes. So he he's receptive, you know. And I think here, you know, the judge changed his mind solely so she won't come and attack me, his own interest. But he changed his mind. So, and and we don't know what happened, right? You know, the Lord said, Listen to what the unjust judge says. Will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones who cry out to him night and day? Right? And again, a parable, not a true story, parable. Right, but it's God, the the message is God listens and he will intercede on our behalf. Right? The judge had a bad reason, but he did what was asked of him.
SPEAKER_00All right, September 6th and 7th kind of go hand in hand. We have September 6th, the parable of the weeds. September 7th is the explanation of the parable of the weeds. Um grateful that we got them both in the same week.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's nice.
SPEAKER_00As opposed to waiting a week to get to find, oh my gosh, what does it mean? Um, so these are from Matthew chapter 13. It says Jesus told them another parable, the kingdom of heaven is like. There's several parables that are the kingdom of heaven is like, which I appreciate Jesus doing that because I feel like then as well as now, people are, well, what is heaven like? Yeah, what what's it gonna be? What's gonna happen?
SPEAKER_02You know, and really it'd be kind of fun just to read all of those in sequence.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, it's too late. Do that.
SPEAKER_02Too late. Well, I don't have this book. They should have done it that way.
SPEAKER_00Um so it says the kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so we heard about good seed earlier on good soil, but yeah.
SPEAKER_00Going back to that again, um again, the enemy came and sowed weeds, so we have weeds and the the good plant growing together. Um and you don't something's interesting, you don't know that until it starts growing.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00We we planted wildflower seeds in our yard, and we had no idea what would come up. So it was kind of fun watching, it's like, oh look, there's yellow flowers, and you know, I don't know plants, so like I don't know what they are, but like it's also kind of fun.
SPEAKER_02Our German Shepherd liked them.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh, she likes to lay right in the middle of them. Thank you very much, Booker. But um yeah, so if you think about that with with people, it's it's after things start growing, after they before you find out there's there's weeds are good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um and it says they the when it started, the servants were like, what should we do? Should we go pull the weeds? And the the owner said, no, let's let them grow together until the harvest. Let them grow together until the harvest. At that time, I'll tell the harvesters to collect the weeds, burn them, collect the wheat, bring into my barn.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Woo!
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, and that's really both days wrapped up pretty tightly, right? You know.
SPEAKER_00So if you don't understand that, Jesus explains it um very well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh the one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed are the people of the kingdom, uh-huh. The weeds are the people of the evil one. And the enemy who sows them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are the angels.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00So pretty clearly at the end, they will be divided up.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And for the weeds, it's not a good ending.
SPEAKER_02Right. Yeah. Yeah. And there'll be fli Yeah, yeah. Obviously, the weeds will be in a blazing furnace, right? Well, there'll be weeping and gnashing of teeth, which is the worst standard in the Bible, in my opinion. Where there's weeping and gnashing of teeth. You know. It's kind of consistent with the message, you'll spend eternity somewhere. Right?
SPEAKER_00Right, right.
SPEAKER_02Do you want to be in the blazing furnace? Or do you want to, you know, be with the son of man?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00And if some people go, I I don't really believe that's true, are you gonna gamble?
SPEAKER_02Right. Right. Are you willing to accept the risk?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Are you willing to accept the risk? You know. Um, and I like the last bit of this of the September 7th reading, right? The righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their father. Then whoever has ears, let them hear. Right?
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Whoever has ears. That's gonna be a huge percent of everybody, right? Let them hear. Meaning, pay attention, people, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know. And he starts, right? This is you know, what heaven is like, right? The kingdom of heaven is like. Like's a simile, right? It has like.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
