SPEAKER_01Correct.
SPEAKER_00Now our July theme has been um, have you heard the one about? So there's stories that uh are maybe obscure, maybe you haven't heard of, or maybe just kind of, ooh, that's kind of weird. That's in the Bible type thing. Um I did that theme for July because so many people say, oh, the like, especially the Old Testament is boring, the Bible's boring. It's like uh it's really not. Um it's really pretty interesting and exciting. So, shall we?
SPEAKER_01Yes, let's get started. I'm excited.
SPEAKER_00July 28th uh says, Did you hear the one about what David had to do to be able to marry Saul's daughter? First of all, I don't know, if you think about David and Saul's relationship, it's kind of interesting that he's marrying his daughter.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, Saul was king, right? He was the first king. Israel wanted a king, and he was, you know, and when he was gonna become king, he was hiding. Saul was, and Saul was, you know, biggest guy around, out of everybody else. Um and David was the seventh son, maybe, but the youngest son of a relatively insignificant family, right? So he was a shepherd. Uh, but we know the story of David, he was anointed by God, which all that other stuff, but from his perspective and how the society was then, he was he was he had no business looking at the king, I would think, is one thing. But Saul wanted him to marry his daughter, make David his son-in-law. Um, so that's what happens here, right? And uh we also know, I think Saul wanted David dead. Saul was threatened by David. He had his own soldiers, he was leading a group, he had great success, and that made Saul jealous.
SPEAKER_00So did he really want him as a son-in-law, or is this a whole setup to try to get him killed?
SPEAKER_01I think it's a setup to get him killed. Saul wanted David to die, right? So he offered him up essentially, and if you think about it, you're willing to offer someone a pretty good deal if you don't think there's any way he can accomplish it or she can accomplish it. But it can't be done, sure, you know. Right, whatever. So that's where we're at.
SPEAKER_00So Saul offers this, like, oh, here, you can have my daughter, you can marry her. And David being David was like, Oh, I I can't. Like, I'm well, the same point. I'm only a poor man and little known.
SPEAKER_01Like, yeah, I I can't be the son-in-law to the king.
SPEAKER_00Um and they kind of talk him into it, and um well, he has to do something to get it. So so then, yeah, which goes right with David going, oh, not me, I'm not worth it, worthy of it. It's like, okay, you're right. So you go. The says the king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you're well, and it says Saul's plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Phil. Like, there's no way he's gonna come.
SPEAKER_01There's no way he can kill them. There's no way, yeah, because he has to kill them, I would suspect, right?
SPEAKER_00You would think.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Uh and you know, he has to, you know, and then get the foreskin, and and in that battle, he's assuming he's not gonna do it.
SPEAKER_00There's yeah, there's no way he's gonna get a hundred.
SPEAKER_01Right, exactly.
SPEAKER_00If he won.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Two. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, there's no way the other Philistines are gonna well it's the same thing we talked about Shamgar.
SPEAKER_01You know, at some point, you know, and the Philistines were threatening. They were, you know, and throughout the Old Testament, Philistines were attacking and, you know, defeating Israel in a variety of ways. So Saul says, I'm gonna give you something you can't do. So I'm not gonna kill you. The Philistines are gonna kill you. And that's the deal that you took. Well, David brings back 200.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because David is David.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And he's like, okay, I accept that and I up it. It's like, oh my god, David.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then and again, this is part of the story that you know, they counted out the full number to the king.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yes.
SPEAKER_01I mean, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Who wants to be there for that? I'm like, okay, one, yeah, two, yeah, three.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, and you could see him, you know, walk in with a basket full of horskins, I guess, and just, you know, go ahead, count them out. And he becomes then the son-in-law of the king, right? Yes. You know, and again, this wasn't God's plan, it was Saul's plan that failed, right? You know. So it's just, it's, it's again, the theme is have you heard this one? Most folks don't know the story. Most folks may know, many folks may know that Saul was the first king. You know, Israel wanted a king. They didn't like having prophets anymore. All the other countries had kings, they wanted a king. Saul becomes the king. Um and Saul would have been king, and Jonathan, his son, would have been king afterwards, but Saul couldn't wait on the prophet to come and ask for a blessing before battle, right? And that was, you know, that was his earthly man side taking control, not his obedient God side. And David was, you know, married a daughter.
SPEAKER_00Oh goodness.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But again, interesting story, right? Yes. And an insight into Saul and David. Right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. All right. July 29th. Um is oh I even give the reference to the last one, sorry. That was 1 Samuel 18, 22 to 27. July 29th is number 17, verses 1 through 10. Um, this one uh we don't get the full pre-story of this, but apparently the excuse me, the um the Levites are arguing about who should be the priest, that the head priest.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00And um, you know, they they argue to Moses all the time. Then Moses goes to God and it's like, help help me out. And God says, All right, and I'm tired of all this grumbling.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Aaron has that role now, right? And Aaron went with Moses to the Pharaoh, right? You know, and all this stuff, but they're still grumbling, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so pretty pretty natural, actually. Yeah, yeah. No matter how you can reason that one person deserves it or is it right for them. There's always other people. I want to do it. I can't I. Yeah. So um God says for them all to take their staff and um or or have a staff for each one and write.
SPEAKER_01For each of the twelve tribes, right? And put their name on it so we know whose staff is who, so there's no confusion. That's right. Right. So we're gonna see what happens. And so each of the twelve tribes, their leader had a staff, which is like a cane, you know. I always think it's a tall cane, but that's what it is, right? It was, you know. And they went ahead, including, and he said, put Aaron's name on one, right? So God says, Aaron's, right? And they go ahead and they put it in the Ark of the Covenant or next to it, right? In the Holy of Holies, right? And God says, right, we'll do this. The one that sprouts will be, right?
SPEAKER_00The one that I choose.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And these are staffs, so they're not living things, they're pieces of wood. That's all they really are. Uh, if you got a rake with a wooden handle, it's the wooden handle, right?
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01The one that sprouts or buds or something, whoever it belongs to, that's why you had to put your name on it, so there's no questions. So what happens to that staff?
SPEAKER_00To Aaron's?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, to Aaron.
SPEAKER_00Oh, well, it's kind of like, you know, David went over and beyond, got 200 foreskins instead of 100. God goes over and beyond. So many times. Um God goes over and beyond. So they they go, or Moses, I'm sure, goes in and brings out the staffs and they look at them, and um Aaron's has sprouted, budded, blossomed, and produced almonds.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, from a piece of wood. Overnight, went through the whole process. Can you just, you know, who what are the belly achers thinking? I said, oh, okay. Apparently Aaron was the choice, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, you know, God didn't want there to be any well, look, mine kind of has a little bud. Yeah. So that should count. Okay, please.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Almonds. We got almonds on this one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But also interesting in this section, the very last sentence, you know, someplace in verse 10, maybe verse 10, this will put an end to their grumbling against me so that they will not die.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01They will not die.
SPEAKER_00Which means if we grumble all the time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, you know. So I always like to say, what does this story tell me, right? God didn't really care for grumbling. You know, it's okay to pray to God. Why does this happen to me? But don't be grumbling all the time, you know. So just kind of again, another story you don't hear much about, but essentially a cane at buds, sprouted, blossomed at almonds. You know. And can you imagine when Moses reported or that God told him this should put an end to your grumbling against the Lord so that you will not die? He said, Okay.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01I hope they said okay.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yes. All right, July 30th, uh 2 Kings chapter 2, verses 7 through 14. Um this is uh a story that I I know that we've alluded to. We haven't read this whole thing, but we've we've talked about it a little bit because it's our buddy Elisha, Elisha with a J, not Elisha, who came after Elijah.
SPEAKER_01Um, but this is when he's taken up to heaven, and Elisha is kind of his um kind of his mentor, his Elijah is Elisha's mentor.
SPEAKER_00Right. Yes. And so Elisha like follows him everywhere he goes.
SPEAKER_01And other parts, not so much here, but other ones, Elijah wasn't necessarily always happy about this.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. You know, it doesn't seem like it.
SPEAKER_01You know, but regardless, Elisha followed him around, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and at this time, Elisha knows that Elijah's end is near.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And so he especially doesn't want to be away from him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, before this different group say, you know that, like I don't know how everyone knew, but they would be like, Elisha, you know, Elijah's time is almost it's like, I know, I know. That's why I'm staying with them. They're like, all right, all right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So um first, at the beginning, we have another situation where Elijah, right, stops the flow of a river, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So this is like, well, we had the Red Sea, and And they stopped at the Jordan. It's the same Jordan River.
SPEAKER_00Just a couple of weeks ago, yeah, we had this, and now we have it again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, where the river was in a heap.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes. So Elijah takes his cloak, rolls it up, strikes the water, and the wire divides.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So they began cross on dry land, dry ground.
SPEAKER_01Now it's like that, he rolled it up. Like just the cloak unrolled, you know, just take it off in a whack. No, he he rolled, you know. So yeah, so they cross over, right?
SPEAKER_00And then Elijah's like, okay, what what is it you want? And it's kind of interesting. Elisha says, I want a double portion of your spirit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And Elijah's like, mm, that's that's a big one to ask for. But he says, but if you see me when I'm taken from you, it will be yours. So, you know, now you know Elisha's not going to leave them.
SPEAKER_01Right. And again, an insight into Elisha, right? Because he says, What can I do for you before I am taken away? Kind of like God said Solomon, what is it that you want? Wealth, power, wisdom, and he picked wisdom. But Elisha, right, with an SH could have picked anything.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And what he wanted was a double portion of Elijah's spirit. So it's really a double portion of Elijah's spirit and relationship and obedience to God, in my opinion. All those things. Double portion. Just one, I want twice that amount, right?
SPEAKER_00And then suddenly, I love that. Suddenly, a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So Elisha did not actually die.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01And it's chariots of fire.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Movie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I'm assuming that's where they got the name from.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Yeah, I would think so. Um, and it says Elisha saw it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And cried out, My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel. And then he saw him no more.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But he took hold of his garment.
SPEAKER_01The one he rolled up before, right?
SPEAKER_00Um, it says he took hold of his garment and tore it into. I think that's his clothes because he saw him leave. And then it says Elisha picked up Elijah's cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood at the bank of the Jordan, took the cloak, struck the water, and the water parts. And he crossed over.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Struck the water with it. Where now is the Lord the God of Elijah? Yes. So it's not the cloak.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01You know.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01But again, it's helpful as a physical example, manifestation of Elijah's spirit. Right. Something concrete. That yeah. But he stopped it again. So this seven verses of the second chapter of Second Kings stops the Jordan twice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so anyway, so that's what took place. And again, the theme is these are stories you don't necessarily always get. But what's the message for us in this story is one um Elisha saw something in Elijah and wanted it, right? Much like we can see something in Jesus and we should want that. You can see something there, right? And he now got not that the cloak was what was significant, right? But he got, I think, the double portion of Elijah spirit. And Elisha became the leading prophet after Elijah. So pretty good. I think again, you know, these are just two regular guys, right?
SPEAKER_00And two regular guys that had a lot of faith in the lot of faith in God.
SPEAKER_01And they focused on God. Again, what should we do? Have faith and focus on God. And if that's the case, we can stop a river from I'm not so sure it'd be popular. But yeah, still possible.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Good stuff. I like it.
SPEAKER_00All right. Last day of July. Um it's from Esther, chapter six, verses one through eleven. Probably one a favorite story, for sure. And I wrote in my notes classic movie material. I mean, this is just and perfect.
SPEAKER_01Esther, the only book of the Bible that doesn't directly reference God.
SPEAKER_00Um yes. Where'd you hear that?
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I mean uh I just heard that recently. Yeah. Somewhere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's so funny.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's just interesting. Uh and it's not that it's, I mean, it's in the Bible, good enough for me. You know, it made it, but it's just kind of interesting that Esther proves to be obedient, does what she's supposed to do, saves her people. Big picture. So, but clearly. But this one, right?
SPEAKER_00But this is her uncle, right? Mordecai.
SPEAKER_01Mordecai.
SPEAKER_00And um King Xerces.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00And King Xerces, uh, I don't know, what was Haman?
SPEAKER_01Well, Haman, I think, wanted to be the number two guy to the king. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01It wasn't an official title, but he was really perhaps the king's favorite guy or most access and not the king, but he was portrayed himself, I think, as a number two person in the kingdom, you know, vice king, more or less. You know, that really exist, but you know, but that's who Heyman saw himself as, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So it starts out with the king couldn't go to sleep. And so he told someone to come in and said, you know, read to me about my reign, you know. Sounds like a probably a typical king. And so they get the book of Chronicles, which I don't know that it's the same book of Chronicles we have, but when you read the First and Second Chronicles Kings, where it talks about all the different rulers, um it often says like when a king dies, uh ill say, and like everything else they did is written down in something.
SPEAKER_01So I mean it was really a recording of their reign.
SPEAKER_00There's yeah, so there's books somewhere that have all the daily things that happened with with those kings. Yeah. Our Bible doesn't have all the little specifics, but they're they're somewhere. So he said, bring bring up it in and read to me, you know, so it would help him fall asleep, I guess. And um so they're reading the story about when Mordecai had heard these two um well, two of the king's officers who conspired to assassinate the king.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Big Fana and Tarish or Taresh.
SPEAKER_00And the you know, the king's laying there listening to this, he's like, oh, huh. Did did we ever do anything to honor Mordecai and recognize him for what he did? And you know, the guy's nope, nope, nothing, nothing's been done. It's like, oh goodness, okay. Who's who's in the court? Well, Haman, who was probably in the court a lot because he wanted to always be the man.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00He wanted to be there.
SPEAKER_01Um it's interesting, he was outside the doorway in the court when the king should have been asleep. Couldn't be right, couldn't fall asleep reading me the book. So I don't know how long until we got to this reading, but he was out there hoping. And what did Heyman want? Why was Heyman out there?
SPEAKER_00Um he wanted to speak to the king about impaling Mordecai on this pole that he had set up. So near his house, he had this huge pole.
SPEAKER_01Some versions 75 feet high, pole or gallows, but 75 feet high, so everyone could see it.
SPEAKER_00And and he wanted to impale to stick Mordecai on that and kill him in front of everyone. It was so high, everyone would be able to see it. So, yeah, so he was hanging out, wanting to talk to him about that. And the attendant said, Well, Heyman's out here. So, oh, bring him in. And so that you know, Heyman is happy to be there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And the king said, So what should be done for the man the king delights to honor?
SPEAKER_01Well, well, Heyman, assuming it's him.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh, he's like sweet. Okay.
SPEAKER_01The king, the king wants to know what I think he should do.
SPEAKER_00For me.
SPEAKER_01For me. For me.
SPEAKER_00Okay, well, let's set this up nicely.
SPEAKER_01It's so funny.
SPEAKER_00So Heyman's like, well, first of all, um, he should have bring him a royal robe that the king has worn and a horse that the king has ridden, one with a royal crest placed on its head. Then let the robe and horse be entrusted to the one the king, to one of the king's most noble princess, let them robe the man the king delights to honor, and lead him on the horse through the city streets, proclaiming before him, this is what is done for the man the king delights to honor. I mean, Heyman has built this up.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this is so nice. Exactly what Heyman wants to have happen. I'm going to be recognized by everybody as someone the king wants to honor, right?
SPEAKER_00And you, I mean, you can just, that's why I'm like, this is such good movie material. You can just see Heyman. And the king says, Oh, go at once. I mean, again, this is when the king's supposed to be sleeping.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But go at once, get the robe and the horse and do just as you suggested for more than Heyman's arch enemy.
SPEAKER_01You know, and Heyman stuck, right? His idea, his suggestion, right?
SPEAKER_00King says do not neglect anything you have recommended. Oh my gosh. So Heyman did it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I wrote at the bottom, irony, sweet irony. I mean, you just oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01It doesn't get any better.
SPEAKER_00If you teach English and you need a good example of irony, here you go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So again, he gets to lay out how will this person be honored thinking it's him. And it's obviously he can't then ask the king, oh, by the way, can we kill Mordecai?
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01Well, after the horse ride, can can we get back to killing it? So and more to come. The rest is really kind of fun to read as well. I mean, Heyman's unhappy, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's it's a great book to read. Um, it's it's got all sorts of wonderful stuff in it, and yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00If you have not read the book of Esther, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And Esther's great. I mean, again, it's it's a strong female role model, right? She's reluctant, like many of us are reluctant.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But for such a time as this, you know, maybe this is what you're here for. And he said, All right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So all right.
SPEAKER_00It doesn't end well for Heyman, but no, in the end it does not. Don't want to be a I don't want to spoil it for you, but spoiler alert. You really, you'll you'll like it. You'll like the ending. Go, go read it. All right. Now we move into August.
SPEAKER_01Correct. What's the theme for August?
SPEAKER_00Exactly. What is the theme for August? There's not really a I don't know what the theme is. I know I wrote it. I have no idea. Um I I think it was just um I think it's God um Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And beginning, it says, Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I think it just speaks to the importance of the Bible, which obviously, if you've been following us since January, hopefully we've conveyed that message.
SPEAKER_00So as we read through this, maybe we can all figure out what the theme was. I don't know. You are welcome to send us fan mail and give us suggestions.
SPEAKER_01Correct. No fan mail yet.
SPEAKER_00But no, we're very sad.
SPEAKER_01We're open to it.
SPEAKER_00But it's all right. Okay, August 1st is Jeremiah chapter 17, verses 5 through 8.
SPEAKER_01Jeremiah's Old Testament book. Kind of, it's a couple books after Psalms and Proverbs, you know, in the Old Testament.
SPEAKER_00And the little bleep up at the top says, Trust in God, why wouldn't you? Um and and this scripture says it starts out, this is what the Lord says. So this isn't what you know some persons making up. This is what God said. Cursed is the one who trusts in man. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Cursed.
SPEAKER_00That's not good.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00And then the next paragraph says, Blessed is the one who trust in the Lord. Okay. So right there, if you just go with those two phrases, which are you gonna choose?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I would think the option is you would like to be blessed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So you should trust in God.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And says they will be like a tree planted by the water. Um, that doesn't fear when heat comes. Its leaves are always green, it has no worries in the year of drought, and never fails to bear fruit. I mean, hello.
SPEAKER_01Pretty successful. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Why why would you not go with that?
SPEAKER_01So you're gonna never fear when he comes. You're you're not gonna worry about struggles or challenges, right? You don't need to fear that because you know you're blessed. It's hard for us to remember that, right? We are going to uh be successful, we're gonna bloom, right? We're always gonna have leaves, and you know, we'll always have positive results. Which is if you're a tree, a fruit tree, bearing fruit is the outcome. So I think this little again, this is four verses, but the takeaway is you know, if you trust in the Lord, you are blessed, and you will have uh whether it's it's it's what you think is success, but you will have success, you know, your leaves will always be green, which means you're healthy and you're you're you know you're rooted, your access to water, all those things you need, and you always have to bear fruit. So you have positive outcomes.
SPEAKER_00And I mean just so you know, it does talk about what the opposite was. If you put your trust in man, it says you're be like a bush in the wastelands and dwell in the parched places of the desert.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And who wants to dwell in the parched places of the desert? I mean, just not the desert. It's the parched places.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it says in a salt land where no one lives.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, you're just yeah. I mean, again, four verses. But if you just had that, why in the world would you not go with God?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Someone sneezes, it's always bless you. You know. We want, I mean, we want people to be blessed, you know. I guess whether they don't sneeze should be curse you, you know. Never really hear that. But anyway, so yeah. Again, simple direct. You make a decision. You know, as we said before, you'll spend eternity someplace. Let's figure, you know, why wouldn't you pick heaven? Right? You're gonna be cursed or blessed, essentially. There's not a third category.
SPEAKER_00Right, right. Which I think some people think there's a third category. Yeah. I think some people are like, ah, you know, I'm not gonna choose either. Like, well, not choosing either, I think you really are choosing one. So all right, August 2nd is Psalm 9, uh, verses 7 through 10. And it says, God will never forsake you.
SPEAKER_01What does forsake mean?
SPEAKER_00Uh leave.
SPEAKER_01Leave, abandon, I would think.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's not a word we use very often.
SPEAKER_00No, that's true. That's true. But um the the last line says, Um, those who know your name, trust in you. So again, we're trusting in God, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. You know, if you want God, if you're looking for God, you will find him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He's not going to be hiding. Right. He is right there because that's exactly what he wants.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And those who know your name, you know someone's name because you have a relationship with them, right?
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01Those who know your name trust in you.
SPEAKER_00So, you know, but valuable, right?
SPEAKER_01And again, we talked this before, for or phrasing the Bible. Here it is in Psalms. The Lord reigns forever. Right? It's not a period, it's a semicolon, right? But he reigns forever. So why wouldn't you want to be on that team?
SPEAKER_00All right, August 3rd, the last day for this week's podcast, um, comes from Ruth, chapter one, verses 11 through 18. So we have two books in the Bible named after women. We have Esther, correct, and we have Ruth.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Um Ruth is a very short book. Um this kind of gives us the beginning of the story. Um, but Ruth is uh one of the names in Jesus' genealogy. And again, one of the few women that is named in his genealogy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So um Ruth was married to Naomi's son.
SPEAKER_01Correct.
SPEAKER_00As was Orpa.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And they, the three women and their husbands had gone to somewhere else because of a drought. Famine, drought.
SPEAKER_01Drought, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, and all the men died.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Right.
SPEAKER_00Don't know why, how, whatever.
SPEAKER_01But three widows.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And Naomi decides, I guess the weather was better, that she decides she was gonna go back home.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00She needed to be near family, um, near her people, so she was gonna go back home. And she told Orpa and Ruth, who were not part of her family, her ancestors, her they were her daughters-in-law. Right.
SPEAKER_01So they were part of the twelve tribes, they weren't part of Israel, right? So her sons married what we would consider local girls when they left, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And she said, you all go back to your families, find someone else to marry. I'm going back to mine. And Orpa's kind of like, okay, all right, I'm going back. But Ruth said, no.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna go with you.
SPEAKER_01I'm staying with you, staying with Naomi. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And Naomi's like, no, no, no, you know, that makes no sense.
SPEAKER_01Like, no, no, Ruth's Naomi's gonna go with Ruth. Ruth said, no, don't go with me. Right. So Naomi No.
SPEAKER_00Naomi's the mom.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah. Oh, sorry, yes, you're right, right. Right.
SPEAKER_00So Ruth um said, no, I want to go with you. And she said, you know, even if I had a son today, you're gonna wait, you're not gonna be able to wait and marry him. And and Ruth's like, it doesn't matter. Um, and a a line that is it's in a song, and people might be familiar with is she says, uh, where you go, I will go. Where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. Uh, where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. And so, I mean, she's like adamant about um staying with her. In fact, she says, and this is said a few times in the Bible, may the Lord deal with me be ever so severely, if even death separates you and me. Okay, no one says that anymore.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00But it it's said a few times in the Bible.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um and even the part, even if death separates you and me, you would think death would.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but they believe in the same God. Right. They believe in what's what's after.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So um, so she goes with her.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um and your God will be my God. Which so right then she converts.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Which I was like, that's such a testament to Naomi. Yes, and her faith and what she has taught Ruth while they've been together about God.
SPEAKER_01If Naomi taught Ruth that, did she not teach Orpah?
SPEAKER_00Well, I just think Orpah didn't receive it.
SPEAKER_01Correct. Correct. So again, why some people hear the message of the gospel and accept Jesus? Some hear it and don't. You know, if you separate the world, there's Ruth and there's Orpah, right? Because it seems unlikely, Naomi wouldn't have told both.
SPEAKER_00Right, right. Exactly. All right. All good?
SPEAKER_01All good. That's it.
SPEAKER_00All right.
