This is our 26th episode, which means we are halfway through the year.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Woo-hoo.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So as we follow the flip devotional book, which is daily devotionals for the year, um, yeah, we are halfway through.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And the first one wasn't a scripture.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_01But but we're gonna have 26 next week and then 26 more after. So this is this is the midpoint next, you know.
SPEAKER_00Thank you.
SPEAKER_01So, but that's how we why we'll have 53, not 52.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. I appreciate that. I forgot about that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But still, we're it is, it's very good. And if you've been following all along, which I hope you all have been, you've had a great taste of both Old and New Testament.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because the the June theme is uh scriptures in the Old Testament and the New Testament. So you read something from both Testaments each day uh that are connected. Yeah. They have something to do with each other.
SPEAKER_01And the reasoning for this, and you know you wrote it, not me, is that there is a connection between the two. They're not two distinct books, there's old and new, but they are linked.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yeah. You need them both.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00A lot of people want to just go, yeah, I'm not gonna read the Old Testament. That's like weird stuff, and and and God's not very nice then because a lot of people die. And I'm just gonna stay in the New Testament where Jesus loves me, this I know.
SPEAKER_01Because the New Testament tells me something.
SPEAKER_00All right. So June 16th is our first day.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And we have back-to-back Passover stories. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because we ended last week on a Passover story. And uh today's is specifically the Passover lamb. Uh, and the Old Testament scripture is Ezra, our next door neighbor's son is named Ezra. Correct. Um, chapter six, uh, nineteen through twenty, and then first Corinthians chapter five, six through eight. And I mean, really, it's just to make that connection. Uh we know in the New Testament, um, when Jesus came that he was the Passover lamb, he was the perfect lamb, no blemish, no sin that was sacrificed for us for our sins based on the laws that were set up.
SPEAKER_01Well, Moses. Moses got from God.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know. And also it's these folks, this Ezra piece is the right, the 14th day of the first month, the exiles celebrated the Passover. So these were people who were Israelites and they were taken prisoners, like prisoners of war, and probably were in Babylonia, and they're living there now. That's where many went there. You know, we can find out for sure, but that's where they're at. But they still celebrated the Passover. They didn't forget about the Passover.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. And it said the Levites slaughtered the Passover lamb for all the exiles, for their relatives, the priest, and for themselves.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So so they did that, and then the first Corinthians passage says, um, for Christ, our Passover line lamb has been sacrificed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And where it says up here for all the exiles, their relatives, I think that's the relative of the Levites as well. Not just the exiles, but the priests and for themselves. So, you know, they were taking care of the whole community, helping them remember the significance of the Passover lamb.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I also like the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. As we heard in the last week, unleavened bread, because they didn't wait for it to rise, they were getting out. So this is but the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. And really, we all want sincerity and truth in our life.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So, yeah. So, like I said, again, just to make that connection of kind of why Jesus um is referred to as the Passover lamb, um, why they say the lamb was the Lamb of God.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Passover Lamb.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01You know.
SPEAKER_00And that's that's where it came from.
SPEAKER_01And the last sacrifice.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yeah. All right. June 17th.
SPEAKER_01A very important day. Happy anniversary. Happy anniversary. Um as my parents would say, quite often. Well, I think my dad would say, like, if it's our 30th anniversary or 40th, it's yeah, and 37 happy years. And my mother would always say, you always overestimate.
SPEAKER_00Oh, goodness. All right. Um, so these passages are from Deuteronomy chapter 8, verses 2 through 3, and Matthew chapter 4, verses 1 through 4. Um, something I've realized with these connections is a lot of the connections come from the early Old Testament books. The Pentateuch, right? The first five books.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, first five books. Um But that's where the rules were written down.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know.
SPEAKER_00So it from there to the New Testament in the well, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, and Ezra is just referencing what they did, kind of a historical thing, as we heard yesterday. Right. So yeah, that's part of it, right?
SPEAKER_00But um in in this, uh the the little Ditty I wrote up at the top um says, I knew Jesus quoted this from the Old Testament, um, but I love reading the context it was in. So in Matthew, is this passage is when Jesus was being tempted and you know, right after he started his ministry, he was led into the wilderness and he was tempted.
SPEAKER_01And during says tempted by the devil.
SPEAKER_00Yes. And after fasting 40 days and 40 nights, says he was hungry.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And the tempter, the devil, always tries to get us at when we are the most vulnerable. Correct. I mean, he knows here's the opportunity for me to really get in. And so Jesus is hungry, he hasn't eaten for 40 days and 40 nights. And he comes in and he says, So if you're the son of God, tell these stones to become bread. You know, you just had to think for a minute, mmm, bread. Oh, that would be so good.
SPEAKER_01And again, we said it before, bread's significant because it was a staple. We call it a staple now, but for many people, bread was what was eaten regularly and the meal. It wasn't something added on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, all the time. And was it during one of the plagues?
SPEAKER_01One of the plagues in London, the king ruled that interesting that people kind of like COVID, they didn't go to work, they avoid other people, they cover their face. Uh, but the bakers had to keep baking because that was the source of food. So the bakers were not permitted not to work. So they still provided, and one origin of baker's dozen is they had to make sure they gave 12 rolls, or they could be like put in jail. So, whether this is true or not, but uh the baker's dozen, which is really 13, they would give 13 to make sure they guarantee they gave 12.
SPEAKER_00Very good. So, um, so when the devil tempts Jesus with that, he says, It is written, man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. And it is written in Deuteronomy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, I'm just gonna, it's just two verses. I'm just gonna read the whole thing. It says, Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these 40 years to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you to hunger, and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. So that's where that scripture came from.
SPEAKER_01Right. So Jesus again knew, and for them it wasn't the Old Testament.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01It was the Testament, it was you know the holy, whatever word. But still the same message. Man does not live but on every word of God, but just not on bread alone.
SPEAKER_00And they were hungry, yeah. And and God gave them bread.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Jesus is hungry, God could give him bread, but he knows Satan tempted him exactly how people were in the Old Testament, right? And manna is what God gave the Israelites as they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years because they had no food, they had no way to, you know, they didn't know how long they'd be someplace. So in the morning, they'd go outside and there'd be these little something, manners.
SPEAKER_00Like, yeah. I think it was like a bread. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And you could collect as much as you wanted, one one day's worth. And if you collected more than that, it'd be rotten the next day.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01And on Saturday or the day before the Sabbath, collect a double portion and it would not be rotten.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Yeah. So God God will provide.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yeah. And 40 years, 40 days, 40 nights.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Rain 40 days. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And uh again, we've we've heard the New Testament story of him being tempted. We know, I mean, probably a lot of people could say man should not live on bread alone. But now you know where it came from.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00First time it was said. June 18th. Uh Jonah, chapter one and uh chapter two, verse from each, and then Luke chapter 11, 29 through 32. Uh the the Luke passage is Jesus talking, and um he says, This is a wicked generation. It asked for signs, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um says, for as Jonah was assigned to the Ninevehes, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. That's Jonah's being compared to this Jesus.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Wow.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And the background is God called Jonah to go and save the Ninevehes. The Ninevites were awful. Just he didn't want to do it. He went the opposite direction, and there was a storm. He got thrown overboard because I'm the reason there's a storm, and as soon as he's thrown overboard, the storm stops. Everyone's safe. All the other sailors are safe.
SPEAKER_00But he's swallowed by a fish.
SPEAKER_01A fish.
SPEAKER_00And is in the belly of the fish for three days.
SPEAKER_01And three nights. Three days.
SPEAKER_00As Jesus was buried for three days before he rose. Yeah. He rose from the dead. He was Jonah was vomited. Vomited.
SPEAKER_01I think that's great.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01If fish do vomit, but you know, God can do whatever. But yeah, so he was vomited onto dry land, right? And he went to Nineveh. And was bitter about it, in my opinion, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And uh this part of the New Testament scripture says the queen of the south will rise at the judgment.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And say something greater than Solomon is here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then it says the men of Nineveh will stand up at judgment. And something greater than Jonah is here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. And that's in in the story with Solomon's, I think it's the Queen of Sheba that was south. But yeah. And she was impressed with Solomon, right? And the Nineveh repented. You know, so that's clearly what happened. But we'll stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it. So Ninevites are gonna, and that's I think part of it is you didn't listen.
SPEAKER_00We listened.
SPEAKER_01You're not listening.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_01You need to listen, right? And the Queen of Sheba will rise up in judgment and people of this generation and condemn them, right? Because she came and listened to Solomon's wisdom. And now something better than Solomon is here. So I mean it's like, why didn't y'all listen? Why didn't y'all pay attention, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Now, if I was a listener and I listened to last week's, where it said it's okay to question God. Remember that one?
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00And yet Jesus is saying here, you're asking for a sign.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00But you're not gonna get one, basically. It's a sign of Jonah. So you're not gonna get it till I die.
SPEAKER_01Right, but you will get a sign.
SPEAKER_00You will. Right. But he sounds a little angry, in my opinion. He sounds a little Well, yeah.
SPEAKER_01This is a wicked generation.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So is it because they're they're wicked? Is it is it because it's coming from them that he's a little irritated, or I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I'm just kind of throwing this out because as I said, if if I was just a listener, and last week you just told me that God's okay. God's okay if I question him, I ask him for a sign, and then I ask him for another sign because I didn't really believe the first sign, he was okay, he didn't get angry, and now it kind of sounds like um Jesus is kinda not okay with them wanting a sign. Um I I don't know. And it keeps saying this generation. Yeah. This generation, this generation.
SPEAKER_01It does say in verse the two before that, as Jesus was saying, Whoever is is not with me is against me. So he's talking about the Azabov, the devil, all that stuff. And and and Jesus was saying this, a woman in the crowd called out, Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you. His reply, Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it. So and then he says, as the crowds increase, this is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given except the sign of Jonah, right? So maybe the message is you will get a sign, but you'll get one sign.
SPEAKER_00Right?
SPEAKER_01And that's the sign you're gonna get.
SPEAKER_00And Gideon and Thomas, who were the two in the stories of, you know, you can question, you can ask, were both followers.
SPEAKER_01We're both followers.
SPEAKER_00They were both they that neither would become even.
SPEAKER_01And I always said I said when we talked about Thomas last week, it was always he wanted to have the experience of seeing is part of it, I think. Just not that he was doubting it. He he wasn't doubting Jesus. He wanted to have the experience, so look like he was doubting his friends, the other apostles, right? Gideon was asked to do something that was completely out of, right? Much like Moses was asked. And he said, I you know, I don't even speak for well. I can't do this. What do you can't do this? What are you talking about? I'll have your brother help you. I'm sure God's thinking, you know, figure it out. I'm gonna help you, right? So I think it's for me, it is you'll get your sign, it'll be the sign of Jonah.
SPEAKER_00Maybe where your heart is in this.
SPEAKER_01Maybe where your heart is, you know, you know, and and and when you're called to do something big, and you may not think it's big, there's always some. Can I handle this? Can I do this? Am I prepared for this, right? And and you know, before the crowd followed Jesus, right, they wanted a sign, they wanted something because maybe they knew the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and maybe the Romans weren't gonna like this very much. So you will get, right? I'm here, I'm telling you, but you'll get the sign of Jonah, which I don't believe people knew what that meant.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01What's the sign of Jonah?
SPEAKER_00Right, yeah. I'm sure that that would have been interesting. Jonah, anybody know what's he talking about? Yeah, yeah. What does that mean? Until after it happened. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Oh three day, you know.
SPEAKER_00Now I got it.
SPEAKER_01But again, for all of us, I think it's it's that's the definition of faith. You believe things that doesn't make sense, right?
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01So but yeah, I could see people being, you know, one listeners being confused. It was okay here. I think this the nuance of the things make it different, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I do think it's where where's your heart and where is it coming from?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. What's your reasoning for asking?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Very good. Um did we miss Katie and Derrick's anniversary?
SPEAKER_01Uh we did. That was the 15th, isn't it? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Ah. Sorry about that, guys. That's gonna be demerit. Yeah, okay. Uh right, June 19th. Um, Deuteronomy chapter 18 and John chapter 5. Uh the little ditty at the top, if you have the book, says about 1500 years before Christ, Moses prophesied about Jesus. So the Deuteronomy has Says, the Lord said to me, What they say is good, I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. Okay, I believe that's talking about Jesus.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00And then in John, Jesus is speaking, and he says, If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So, you know, again, again, the Old Testament is important.
SPEAKER_01Lays the foundation, right? And here Jesus references it, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, so really is again not something we should dismiss. And it's not something to read just because the stories are really cool.
SPEAKER_00Although some really are. Wait till next month.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh. I can hardly wait.
SPEAKER_00Um, all right, June 20th, we have bread from heaven, which we just talked about. We did. Kind of, right?
SPEAKER_01Bread from heaven's a big deal.
SPEAKER_00Um this is Exodus chapter 16, verse 4, and John chapter 6, 30 through 35. Um, Exodus 16 says, Then the Lord said to Moses, I will rain down bread from heaven for you. And this is talking about the manna that Steve just talked about. And the people go out each day and gather enough for that day. Well, then in John chapter 6, Jesus is talking and um says, For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. And someone says, Oh, always give us this bread. It's like, yes, this is what we need. And Jesus says, I am the bread of life.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. So bread of heaven was manna, but then bread of heaven was Jesus coming down. Um I'm sure some people were like, Well, we we really wanted well, and uh earlier in the John chapter six, um they say our ancestors ate the manna. He he gave them bread from heaven to eat. You know, they're kind of like, well, they they got that. What what about us?
SPEAKER_01Well because again, bread was basic.
SPEAKER_00What can we get?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um and he said, but you know, it wasn't Moses, but it's my father who gives the true bread from heaven.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00The bread that gives life to the world.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I am the bread of life.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And ever comes to me will never go hungry. And every thirsty. It's kind of like the woman at the well.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01Right?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Whoever drinks this water will never be thirsty again. Oh, give me that.
SPEAKER_00Give me that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So it's again, you know, bread and water is is, you know, bread and water, bread and water.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But yeah. And he's the bread of life, eternal life.
SPEAKER_00All right. June 21st is Isaiah 53, 7 and 8, and Acts chapter 8, 26 through 35.
SPEAKER_01And Isaiah's quoted directly in this Acts. That's how we get the two readings, right?
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yeah. So it's not written down there, but you just read the Acts and it's right there. So this story is about Philip and the eunuch, and um the man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and he was on his way home, and he was reading the book of Isaiah.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Kind of cool. And the spirit told Philip, go to that chariot and stay near it. So this is also a great story of just following God's lead.
SPEAKER_01Yes. And I would suspect the average Israelite wouldn't go near a chariot, right? Uh of who was it?
SPEAKER_00Ethiopian eunuch.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Kandike, which means Queen of the Ethiopian. So this was again, you know, a ruler, an important person. I don't think you would go there, but Philip, boom. Right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And you know, stay near it. It's like, okay. So Philip ran up to the chariot and he heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. And Philip said, Do you understand what you're reading?
SPEAKER_01Pretty bold.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but kind of interesting. Um, he says, How can I unless someone explains it to me? So it made me think how many people read the Bible? They don't understand it, but they read it.
SPEAKER_01Because they're supposed to.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but they don't really know what it's talking about. And and maybe perhaps our podcast is helping a little bit with that. Maybe there were parts of it that you didn't understand that we've talked about.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you have a little bit better understanding of it now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, but he invited Philip to come up and sit with them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And they read the scripture, and the scripture from Isaiah was he was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation, he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth. So the the eunuch didn't know who it was talking about.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But Philip did.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He said, Tell me.
SPEAKER_01Tell me, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And Philip says he started with that very passage and told them all the good news about Jesus. And it's not in here, but um, then the eunuch says, Well, there's a little puddle of water. Can I be baptized?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Said, Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And who knows what happened when he got back to Ethiopia. Right? Who knows? And Philip was taken away. I mean, just you know, this by the Spirit went someplace else, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, just disappeared.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But again, yeah, yeah. But he was led like a sheep to the slaughter, obviously a reference, right, to Jesus.
SPEAKER_00Um we've talked about him being the Lamb of God.
SPEAKER_01Lamb of God, correct.
SPEAKER_00The Passover lamb.
SPEAKER_01And during the trial before his execution, before his crucifixion, he was asked by the Pharisees, he was asked by Pilate, Herod, and he never answered. Right? So he was silent, right? And he was humiliated.
SPEAKER_00And there wasn't justice because people um lied. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Witnessed against him that were yeah, lies.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But yeah. So how cool is that?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00So in the New Testament is an actual scripture from the Old Testament.
SPEAKER_01Actual, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_00The real thing.
SPEAKER_01Not a reference. Right.
SPEAKER_00All right. June 22nd is a psalm, chapter 78, 1 through 7, and Matthew chapter 13, 34 through 35. And I was actually surprised um that parables was mentioned in the in the Old Testament, because I've always connected that with the New Testament, with how Jesus told stories. Um in the Psalm passage, it says, uh, my people hear my teaching, listen to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth with a parable. I will utter hidden things, things from of old things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us. And then in Matthew, Jesus says, or it says, Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet. I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creations of the world.
SPEAKER_01So but using parables.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And he did use parables, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and a parable is.
SPEAKER_01I'm telling you right now, got official definition. A parable is a short, simple story designed to teach a moral, religious, or spiritual lesson through a comparison or analogy. They are unlike fables. But that's what it is. So they teach a story.
SPEAKER_00So they aren't things that really happen. So like the prodigal son is a parable. Is a parable. Um, I think you know, some people have thought some of those stories were real.
SPEAKER_01Real. Who was the prodigal son? But even that story, you talk about uh losing one of your hundred sheep, one of your ten coins, one of your two sons, right? But it's as designed to teach a lesson, clearly, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And he never said it was true.
SPEAKER_00No, no, it's just people thought. Yeah. Yeah. The Good Samaritan was a parable. Yes. Didn't really happen.
SPEAKER_01But but it was a story people could relate to and could learn, understand the message.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. All right. I don't know if it was. I felt like that was a kind of a quick, quick podcast.
SPEAKER_01It was.
SPEAKER_00Which is all right. Um, I think that's all we've got this week.
SPEAKER_01That's it.
