SPEAKER_03

Welcome to Flip Devotional the Podcast, where each week Martha Shannon, the author of Flip Devotional the Book, and Steve Shannon, discuss the readings from the week. If you haven't gotten Flip Devotional the Book, it is still available on Amazon and Barnes Noble, a little pricier than I wish. The ebook is available on Barnes Noble for $9.99. I'm also posting the scriptures from the readings on the podcast notes. So if you don't have the book, you can pull those scriptures up and you can read them ahead of time. Read them day to day, however fits you. We also have the companion verses that are available on Flip Devotional Facebook page where you can read verses that coincide with the Flip Devotional Scriptures. If you read Flip Devotional last year and want something different, or you want to read something in addition to the Flip Devotional Scriptures. This is all about getting you to read your Bible, for you to dig into it. It's the whole purpose of this. We go. Yes. And then we go as far south. I I don't know if Satch, Texas, is further south than Ring Gold, Georgia or not. Oh, sorry. We have a Bellevue, Florida. That's gonna probably be the furthest south. Um, and then North, Chicago, I think is the furthest north we go. Um, so kind of fun. Yeah. I don't know. It's I guess my second hobby is tracking where where our podcast is being listened to. Oh, so much data we can have so much fun with. All right. We are continuing Easter passages um for the entire month of April. Uh last week we ended uh April 20th with Jesus is in the tomb. Um they've put the guards up just in case.

SPEAKER_00

Just in case they come by the disciples and take his body.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, to make it look like he rose and that what happened, haha, you know, really did. So today we start on April 21st, and we're going through April 27th. April 21st is Matthew 28, 1 through 10. And this is when the the women go to the tomb. Is what this part say.

SPEAKER_00

I was like, the other Mary.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, well, you know, there's like at at least three Marys, so I'm sure it gets a little confusing. Um they they left to go to the tomb. Now I'm not sure. I'm not sure what their plan was. Were they just going to just see the tomb? And you know, like you would visit a grave site. Were they just going to visit?

SPEAKER_00

Um I thought some other gospel that they were going to help prepare the body.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

So I think they saw him be obviously they knew what tomb he was in. So somewhere they saw that. They didn't see it in Matthew. But I think that's, you know, that was their reasoning for going. They got up early to go and do that.

SPEAKER_03

Aaron Powell But Joseph and Nicodemus had prepared the body.

SPEAKER_00

Well, maybe they didn't know that. Maybe they just saw him wrapped in linen and was putting in the body. I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

And maybe they didn't know there was this big rock blocking the Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I I don't know. Um, but there was a violent earthquake.

SPEAKER_01

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_03

An angel of the Lord came down and rolled the stone and sat on it.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_03

It says his appearance was like lightning. So it was very bright. Clothes were white as snow.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_03

The guards were so afraid. So the guards are still there at this point. Mary and Mary are just on their way. Um, the angel scares the guards so much.

SPEAKER_00

They become like dead men. So they're out. Right.

SPEAKER_03

So and then the women get there, and the angel says, Don't be afraid.

SPEAKER_00

Again, anytime in the Bible there's an interaction between a person and an angel, the first thing the angel says is Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid.

SPEAKER_03

So obviously they are fearful looking.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it causes you to be afraid. Something happens that makes you afraid.

SPEAKER_03

Um since you're looking for Jesus, we we know. Um He's not here, he's risen.

SPEAKER_00

So my question is are there three more significant words in the Bible than he has risen? That phrase.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I got one. In the beginning.

SPEAKER_03

Wow. But you as a review, you know.

SPEAKER_00

You stunned me on that. Yeah, he has risen. I mean, that's that's you know. That's the story, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Just as he said. Little dig by the angel there. You know. Not to Mary and everybody else, but but just, you know.

SPEAKER_03

No, but to like the guards and stuff who are like, oh, maybe we should do something.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, who are like dead men, but still, he has risen just as he said. Exactly as he said this is taking place.

SPEAKER_03

So yeah. Um, if if you have a flipped devotional book, there was a typo on this. It says they go quickly. It's really supposed to be then go quickly. Uh um, and tell his disciples, but that's all right. They kind of make sense. It's it's okay. Um yeah, third, like so. Go, go tell his disciples that he's risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him. Now I have told you.

SPEAKER_00

Now I've told you. I'm done. Thank you. All right.

SPEAKER_03

That is why I was here. I have done it.

SPEAKER_00

That's right. Be gone. Sign off on my card, I will go. Right. Then it says, Do not be afraid again, right? Oh, no, this is when they see Jesus.

SPEAKER_03

So so they leave and then Jesus shows up.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Says, don't be afraid, go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So then excited, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, that's so essentially we've now have the mocking, the trial, not really. Uh the crucifixion, and now we're to the resurrection. Right.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And this next one, April 22nd, Matthew 28, 11 through 15, uh, is is the cover-up story. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And I I just I like this one.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I call it bribes and lies.

SPEAKER_03

Nice.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Because they said the chief priests, a large sum of money, right? So here it is, you know. And then said, and if anything comes of it, we'll keep you out of trouble.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So they come up with their story because the just in case, you know, did happen.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

He did rise. Yeah. Uh the the guards are like, uh, we we don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

All all we know is the body's gone. We didn't move the rock. Uh oh my God. Um, and they're like, okay, okay, let's let's figure out what we're gonna say. Here's what we're gonna say. His disciples came during the night and stole them away while while we were asleep, which wait a minute.

SPEAKER_00

They were told not to do that.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, yes, that's a no-no for this. So they're kind of speaking bad about themselves.

SPEAKER_00

Well, that's the lies. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's like we fell asleep, we were wrong.

SPEAKER_00

Um, yeah, we're but it's the chief priest saying to them, his disciples came, This is your story. Yes, right, right. Said, all right, whatever, but large sum of money, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

And this is a large sum of money if you go back right to Judas, 30 pieces of silver. So they've paid uh what appears to be a lot more money to cover it up. So yeah. So bribes and lies, lies and bribes.

SPEAKER_03

All right, April 23rd and 24th is Luke 24, verses 13 through 35, and what is called the um Emmaus Rhodes story. Uh I think it is only in Luke. I'd have to double check that is it's not in all the the gospels. So this is after the the crucifixion, obviously after the resurrection, although these people don't know that.

SPEAKER_00

Correct.

SPEAKER_03

Um, two people uh like going home.

SPEAKER_00

Going home to Mayus, seven miles away after after the crucifixion. And even today there's you can do it on a Mayus walk.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

You know, it must be based off of the story.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I've I've never done one. You've never done one, but I've heard about it a lot. Yeah. Um, so they're they're hang home, and I mean it this is all just very natural. They're walking home, they're talking about what happened, and yeah, there's no radio everything, and it's like, wow, that you know, that really was bad, blah, blah, blah. And then just Jesus comes up and kind of starts walking with them. Hey, where are you all talking about? What's going on? They're like, What?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And I would suspect then it wasn't uncommon if you're on the road and you're walking to join a group, right?

SPEAKER_03

And that he's going the same direction they're going. So it's not like he's coming towards Jerusalem. Yeah. And like, oh, what happened there? No, I haven't gotten there yet. So they're assuming he was there too. Uh are you like the only person who doesn't know what happened? Are you that loser? Or um so they tell him what happened. And um trying to see where this part ends. Yeah, so they just tell Jesus what happened. Jesus at Nazareth.

SPEAKER_00

They did not see him. Right? But they did not see Jesus, right? Telling her, you know, again, the tube's empty. So so they know that took place.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, okay, yes, thank you.

SPEAKER_00

So they know that, but they don't know.

SPEAKER_03

But yeah, but they didn't see Jesus.

SPEAKER_00

And they said he was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. And they say the chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death.

SPEAKER_03

It says we had hoped he was the one.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But they obviously I think these two didn't, they didn't believe he was the one.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

They hoped he was. And we're kind of like Will's bummer.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and maybe they didn't believe he was because he was crucified.

SPEAKER_03

Right, right. So now they're going back home, like, well, maybe next time. Yeah. So April 24th, the the rest of them may a story. Yeah. So then Jesus starts talking to them. And and is explaining the the truth to him. It says, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning himself. So he's talking for a bit.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then they get to the village, and as you said, it was seven miles.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So that's a good long walk.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it's getting dark, right? It's nearly evening.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. So and they're like, why don't you just stay with us? So I guess they made it to their place. And they go to the table, he breaks, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them. And then they realized who he was.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then he was gone.

SPEAKER_00

Then he's gone. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's just there's not much to say about that, right? Their eyes were opened.

SPEAKER_03

It says, were not our hearts burning within us while he talked?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, you know, but their eyes were open. When have we had an experience when our eyes had not been opened in our own lives, right? Some event, something, some moment in time, some event uh that our eyes were not open. And we could have, you know, at that moment had an interaction, right? That changed everything, right? And I was like, their eyes were not open, and then he disappeared from their sight. Right? Their eyes were opened, then he disappeared from their sight. So he knew they knew briefly, right?

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

And what what what's the next thing that they do?

SPEAKER_03

They get up and go back to Jerusalem. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Seven miles. Seven miles. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And they said it was dark.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I didn't care. Right?

SPEAKER_03

The day's almost over.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And they're heading back.

SPEAKER_00

They're heading back.

SPEAKER_03

You know they're heading back was a way faster than the bigger. Oh my gosh. They were pulling back.

SPEAKER_00

They were barely touching the ground, right?

SPEAKER_03

And they find the eleven.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Because, you know, not Judas.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And they're like, it's true. The Lord is risen.

SPEAKER_00

No, it's the eleven who said it is true. They found the eleven and those with them assembled together and saying, It is true.

SPEAKER_02

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

So it's the eleven that says true. And it's the Lord has risen and appeared to Simon.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

What happened in that conversation?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

What happened? Right?

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_00

And again, we've read this a lot, but is when I was looking at it again this morning, and I mean we read it, you know, when I read it this week, it was appeared, right? Appeared to Simon. And then they report what happened with them. Right. Then they report. But it's like, what was that conversation? Right?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. That's beautiful.

SPEAKER_00

You know. Yeah. And it also makes Simon the leader. Peter the leader, right? You know. So yeah. Pretty, I mean, it's just kind of remarkable how that all took place. And 14 miles. You know. And how they Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. Take. This is my body. Right? That time, you know. You know, we have communion, and sometimes it's kind of rote and automatic. But maybe we need to stop and think about what was one of the guys' names? Um Cleopas.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know, that that could be the power of communion, is, you know. And it was, do this in remembrance of me. You know. They saw him, right? So. Yep.

SPEAKER_03

All right. Then we have April 25th, Luke 24, verses 36 through 49. It says, while they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And said, Peace be with you. They were startled, frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And it's like, why are you troubled? Yeah. Like, look, look at my hands and my feet. It's me. It's me. Touch me. See? Not a ghost.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And he appears, I don't know if it's Luke or another gospel, and it says there, the door was locked. The door was barred, right? So he just, you know, kind of showed up.

SPEAKER_03

Like a ghost.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But he's not a ghost because he's real.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's right. And then he says, Do you have anything here to eat? Again, that's the human side. That's the real side, right?

SPEAKER_03

And it's like, okay, what are you gonna say to Jesus? He's you saw him crucified. Now he appears here. Like it it's kind of an icebreaker.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I I just imagine them all standing there, just kind of staring, like, oh my gosh, what will I so? Do you have anything to eat? It's like, oh uh okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um broiled fish. I mean, it's not a very uncommon question, right? Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then he says, This is what I told you while I was with you.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Everything had to be fulfilled about me that was in the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms.

SPEAKER_00

And the Psalms. I know. I haven't heard about the Psalms.

SPEAKER_03

Um, and then says, then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures.

SPEAKER_01

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_03

He told them this is what is written the Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

You are witnesses of these things. I'm going to send you what my Father has promised. But stay in the city until you've been clothed with power from on high.

SPEAKER_00

And that is the Holy Spirit.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Right.

SPEAKER_00

That's the Holy Spirit. But yeah, stay here. Because it's just better to be here. So yeah. So again, going through. He's back. Right. Think of the relief. You know, they heard the story. You know, I'm gonna, you know, it's all gonna happen. And then the actually seeing it, right? I mean, it's it's kind of like when someone tells you that we're gonna do this, this, and this, and then it all happens exactly as they said, right?

SPEAKER_03

So April 26th is John 20, 24 through 29. And this is about our buddy Thomas, who I think of all the Easter parts of the story. Um, doubting Thomas is one of the ones most people know about.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And this is the only time, I mean, during the early, you know, his ministry, you knew Thomas was one of the, I mean, he was one of the 12 that was listed, but I don't remember reading anything about him until now.

SPEAKER_03

So Jesus was just with all the disciples, had broiled fish, talked to them and stuff. But apparently Thomas wasn't there.

SPEAKER_00

Apparently, why? Uh I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Everyone was there but Thomas.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, maybe he had a day job.

SPEAKER_03

Like, Thomas buddy, where where were you? So he comes in and they're like, Oh, we saw the Lord, we um, you know, we were there, he was here, yada. You you should have been here.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

He was here.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And Thomas, I don't know the reasoning behind him not believing.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_03

Is is he saying this because he's like, well, I'm not gonna believe you. I want to see it myself. You know how people will come and tell you something, right? And you're like, yeah, right. Well, I'm I'm gonna find out myself. I'm not gonna believe it just because you said it.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Because when I've read this story, you know, as you said, this is the only time you hear a lot of that, right? I had it, he didn't believe Jesus had come back, right? He didn't believe that. But maybe he didn't believe them, or he didn't want to just rely on their message. Right. Right? He wanted he wanted some sort of confirmation, right?

SPEAKER_03

You know, but he kind of pushes it. Oh yeah. It's like unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where put my finger where the nails were, yeah. Thomas. Yeah, put my hand my hand into his side.

SPEAKER_00

I will not believe. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Thomas.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Come on.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, I will not believe.

SPEAKER_03

So I I and I don't know. If I were the disciples, I've been like, okay, fine.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, good enough. But maybe it's it's I want to have that experience for myself. I'm I I need to blame them. I want to have that same, you know. I feel cheated, right? Because I wasn't here, I was, you know, who knows what I was doing, right? So, but and maybe he's just being emphatic. Put my finger where the nails were, put my hand on his side, but he's just, you know. But clearly you can see where it's right now, it can read as I will not believe. He doesn't believe, I will not believe it, right?

SPEAKER_03

So it says, a week later, yeah, his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them.

SPEAKER_00

There it is, the doors were locked.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, and Jesus came and stood among them, peace be with you again.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Because you know, we might be afraid because this guy just popped in.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And he said to Thomas, put your finger here.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

See my hands? Reach out your hand, put it here in my side. So, mmm. Jesus knew what he said.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Oh, yeah. Stop doubting and believe. Right. Yeah. So Jesus knew, right?

SPEAKER_03

Jesus knew. He wants to put his finger in my hand. He wants to put his hand on my side. Okay, Thomas, here you go.

SPEAKER_00

Go ahead. And you know, throughout this, now we're close to wrapping up four months. We're about almost a third of the way through, right? Um it's it's it goes back to what does this say about Steve, right? Or what does it say about Martha or anyone out there listening? That maybe at times we are a Thomas.

SPEAKER_03

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_03

Definitely, yes.

SPEAKER_00

We are a Thomas, right? But his response was my Lord, my God, right?

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. And and I don't think Jesus is upset with him at all. Right when he says stop doubting and believe. I think it's I I don't, you know, this is just my interpretation. I hear it as stop doubting, believe. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like there's no explanation point, right? Join so it's stop doubting believe. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Join us in this.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Be be a part of this with us because we are going somewhere together. Yeah. So come on.

SPEAKER_00

But it also speaks in some ways to the struggle of faith for right. He was one of the twelve. He was there when the 4,000 were fed. He was there when Jesus walked on water, right? All the miracles, right? He was there, right? You know.

SPEAKER_03

That's true.

SPEAKER_00

And you know, and maybe when he sent disciples into the town, you know, go get the colt. There'll be one tied up, take it away. Tell them the Lord needs. That may have been Thomas. I don't know. Right. I mean, I don't know if it was one of the disciples, apostles, who knows? But it could have been, right? Or we heard the story. So I think for us, part of the time is is, you know.

SPEAKER_03

He was one of the close ones.

SPEAKER_00

One of the close ones. Yeah. Yeah. And you know, went away at times. Right? Went with Jesus. He Jesus in the 12 went, right? Right. So, but I think, you know, we have to remind ourselves, uh, at times you may be a Thomas, right? But we need to stop doubting and right and realize. Stop doubting, believe, and recognize him as my Lord, my God.

SPEAKER_03

I also think that if we are struggling to believe, that just like Jesus gave Thomas exactly what he asked for so he could believe, yeah, that Jesus will do that for us. Yeah. If if we're in some situation, it's like, I just need help believing that you are here or that you're a part of this, or you know, that I'm supposed to do this or whatever.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I think he will give us what we need.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yeah. When bad things happen in your life, right? You you just need to realize he's there, right? You know. Regardless of how awful it may be, right? You know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And the the last thing Jesus says in this on this day uh is something a lot of people have heard. Um, because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

That's us.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that is us. And many times, you know, I have felt kind of jealous. You know, I wasn't there, right? I rely on the reported stories and people's sharing their faith with me, right? But, you know, they were there. So we are clearly blessed. We are blessed. Oh, right. Yes.

SPEAKER_03

And April 27th, the last day for this week, is John 21, 1 through 6. Um says, after Jesus appeared again to his disciples by the Sea of Galilee, it happened this way. Simon Peter, Thomas. There he is. Uh Nathaniel, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. And Simon Peter says, I'm gonna go out to fish. And they said, We'll we'll go with you. I I love this because it's just so typical. It's so human. It's um, you know, I I don't know how long it's been. In the the last one, there was a week between the disciples seeing Jesus. Um, so I I don't know how much time has passed, but they were they were told to stay in Jerusalem. And so they're staying, but their leader is gone.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

They're kind of lost.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_03

What what do we do? Yeah, what's next? I'm I'm sad that he's gone. I'm lost. I just, you know, and so Simon Peter goes back to his mission.

SPEAKER_00

What he knows, right?

SPEAKER_03

It's where he started, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It was his job.

SPEAKER_03

This is this is kind of all I know. Yeah, I did this till I followed Jesus for three years. I don't know what to do next.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So I'm just gonna go back to fishing. They were all just kind of hanging out. It's like, well, okay, we'll we'll go with you. So they hop in the boat and go out on the water. And I'm I'm not a fisherman, but apparently fishing at night is better than fishing during the day.

SPEAKER_00

Um yeah, I I don't know anything about fishing. I do understand. And this wasn't fishing with poles necessarily, they threw their nets. You know, so it's bolt fishing. It's it's it's a a lot of fish.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

They didn't have a way to keep it fresh.

SPEAKER_03

Ah.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Okay. So they they couldn't do that. So I would assume you fished at night.

SPEAKER_03

I went and sold it at the market.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And then you went back out, right? Or or you took it to someone who sold it because you had then you go back out at night and fish. So it's as fresh as possible. You know, freshly caught.

SPEAKER_03

Very good. All right. It says they they caught nothing.

SPEAKER_00

Nothing.

SPEAKER_03

And early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore. Disciples didn't realize it was Jesus. He calls out, friends, haven't you any fish? No.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_03

Throw your net on the right side of the boat, and you'll find some. When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

SPEAKER_00

And these were fishermen, right? This is what they did beforehand, right? As you said, hadn't done them for three years, really, right? You know. And to their credit, they did it. And I think in another gospel, there's some feedback. You know, we haven't caught anything tonight. Just throw it on that side, right? And they did it right away. You know, they're in a boat. You would think they would see fish or experience fish, because they're not that far away because they're yelling at each other. So, but they did it and they caught unable to haul the net because of a large number of fish.

SPEAKER_03

So that passage is John chapter 21.

SPEAKER_00

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_03

Luke chapter 5.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

So this is back at the beginning of Luke.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. You've been waiting on this, haven't you?

SPEAKER_03

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, that's what it was.

SPEAKER_03

Simon answered, Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I'll let down the nets. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

That's when Peter um started following Jesus. After that, um Jesus said, Come on, I'll make you a fisher of men. And they he left everything and followed Jesus. So it's the same thing. Yeah. When Peter was first called to follow Jesus, and now after being with him three years, seeing everything he's done, same thing, seeing him crucified, he's seeing him raised.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And waiting and feeling lost in what am I gonna do? He goes out to fishing again. I'm sure I don't know if Peter is remembering back or not. But the because they they don't know it's Jesus, but when they pull it the net up, um again, we we don't get the next day till next week, but the next day in flip devotional is the rest of the story, and it's after they catch so many fish that it clicks to Simon Peter. Yeah, and he's like, Oh, this is Jesus, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And both times, yeah, yeah, he's here, right? And both times this happens, he stops fishing. Yeah, so he catches more fish than he's ever caught, and he's so maybe part of the message is what you do day to day is less important than what you do for Jesus, obviously. But you know, but here's concrete examples where he gave all that up, right? Followed Jesus, and then when he's feels alone and doesn't know what to do, he reverts back to what he knows, which kind of makes sense, right? That's not a bad response. And then Jesus comes to him again, and this time he he gets clear direction from Jesus. What is he to do, right? And there's no indication he fished again.

SPEAKER_03

And the going back to fishing this time, was it you know, because he was lost, he just knew nothing else, so he's gonna go fish. Is it because he remembered um this is what I was doing when Jesus came to me the first time?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. Um might very well be. I mean, and I don't know there's any reference. I mean, he didn't talk about this, I don't think. Peter doesn't, right? We don't read about it. Um or is it I gotta do something?

SPEAKER_03

Right, right.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I I I I just can't sit here.

SPEAKER_03

Right, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Waiting for him to show up when the door's locked, right?

SPEAKER_03

And I think what's beautiful about God, about Jesus, is he will meet you wherever you are.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Some people, and and even Peter could look at this as a failure.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, I was fishing, I gave it up to follow Jesus, and now here I am back fishing again.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and there's nothing, right?

SPEAKER_03

And I didn't even catch any fish.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I thought, you know, Jesus is the Messiah, he's back, but nothing's changed.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, nothing's changed. Yeah, so it could be a very negative um experience for for him and and for people looking, oh Peter, hello, what were you doing before? What why are you back here fishing again?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you spent three years following this guy and nothing.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. So so so many things. But Jesus, like, it's okay. I got you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And and just like the breaking of bread clicked for the two guys on the Emmaus Road, putting the net in and catching a large number of fish was like, oh my gosh. Yeah, that's yeah that's Jesus.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And and Jesus gives him a something to do besides fish coming up, right? You know, so we'll read that. Yeah. So it's it's we're close to the end, right? 28, 29, 30.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. Then we'll be done with all the Easter stories. And I'm I hope that Steve and I, you we're looking at these stories for who knows how many times we've read this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, but we're looking at, and it do you hear us just kind of bouncing questions off each other? We don't even have the answers.

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_03

It's like, well, what of this? What about that? I wonder, I wonder, you know, that's what I encourage you to do when you're reading your Bible.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Ask questions. Yeah. You don't have to have the answers.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_03

Sometimes I come up with a question and I'll go to church and ask our pastor, um, so what about this? What do you think? And totally encourage you to find other people that you all can discuss this with. Find people who are more knowledgeable than yourself. Yeah. Um, but just questioning things, wondering about things, is how you get a little bit more out of the scripture than you would get if you just read it, close it up, set it down.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And I it's not a novel.

SPEAKER_03

Right. I write questions um in my Bible. I'll, you know, write comments. I'll write stuff like I wonder, blah, blah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So I encourage you to do that. And again, I encourage you to read these scriptures before you hear us talk about them. And then you can come up with your own questions and wonderings. Um or, you know, if you want to read it on your own afterwards, that's that's fine too. But get into the Bible yourself.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, God wants questions.

SPEAKER_03

Totally welcomes them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

He's okay with it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And there's some questions that I ask others or I Google to get an answer because I know there's a specific answer.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

You know. But some of these things nobody knows.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Right.

SPEAKER_03

But it's it's good to think about.

SPEAKER_00

I agree.

SPEAKER_03

It's good to think.

SPEAKER_00

Good to think.

SPEAKER_03

All right. That is the end of this week.

SPEAKER_00

That's the end. The week is over.
